Definitely recommend you take the funicular at Bergen. No need to do a ship excursion - just buy your ticket at the train. Nice market area and shops near the cruise terminal.
We booked a ship excursion to do the Flam railway and were glad we did. It is possible to buy your tickets from the railway but by the time we left the ship and walked to the railway, nearly all the train tickets had been sold.
What ports are you visiting?

Thanks marg. Our ports are Stavanger, Bergen, Skjolden, and Olden. There are excursions offered to anything that seems to be in the general area, from mountain bus rides to lake boat rides. I am assuming the towns themselves are interesting for roaming at every port. Due to back problems, I can't walk far but my husband is more able.

We spent most of our time in Stavanger wandering around the old town which is close to the cruise terminal. The houses were so pretty. There is a small museum there based on the fishing industry. We didn't visit but other people said it was interesting.
