Hotel for Rome before cruise??

Hi I am sailing out of Rome in September and was wondering if anyone knows of a good Hotel either downtown or out near the Pier. (I know the dock is quite a ways out) Any ideas from people that have sailed out of that area? Thanks Diane

Forget about the pier - Civitaveechia - its an hour train ride from Rome and there is nothing in this town other than the cruise terminal and train station.

We stayed at the Sheraton Roma last year before our cruise from Civitavecchia-- it is outside of Rome and is very MODERN and upscale-great for relaxing after flying all nite-
It had a great buffet dinner that was terrific and would not break the bank-

We stayed there because the cruise ship was coralling all their passengers there and picking them up the following morning for the bus ride to Civittavecchia-- The drive is 1 1/2 hrs depending on traffic....
THe cost of a private car service is the same as the cruise lines charge pp for the bus , and much more luxurious=

We used a car service to pick us up at the airport and take us to the Sheraton--and if something fell thru with the BUS from the cruise, we were going to use them to get to Civittavecchia===

Email [email protected] and make it to the attention of Andrea==

their website is

THEY are fabulous--

ALSO do NOT get to the PORT too early as it is a desolate port in the middle of nowhere-just a port and ships-NOTHING ELSE--NO BATHROOMS,NO PLACE TO SIT DOWN....

We took the Windsurf last year and they made us wait outside in 80 degree heat for over an hour until they were ready to board....

WHich ship are you going on?

Hi Andy/Peter -I'm sailing out with Holland America and have two days free.
I was hoping to find a resort with a courtesy bus from the airport. It looks like there are quite a few around the Sant(e) Severa area or Civtivecchia area. Have emailed the tourism board to hopeflly find out more. Do either of you have any info on resorts in that area?

why would you want to stay at Civit when you have 2 days and could stay in Rome. You will not believe how little is Civit.

Grab every little moment in Rome that you can. Depending on your budget there are many interesting hotels in Rome. In the 2/3 star range you will find several near the main railway station "Termini". This station links the rail lines, subway lines and bus lines. Many hotels are a short walk from the station. If you have not been to Rome before you are in for an amazing experience. The port that everyone else has slammed already is best experienced quickly. The one element of interest is that a famous sculptor designed the fortress that once stood guard over the port.

Hi Diane..we sailed out of Rome in June and read about a great little hotel in Conde Naste magazine, in a super central location, that was very reasonably priced (around $150 Euro's), including an excellent breakfast daily. We walked everywhere from our hotel. I agree with other posts -- stay in Rome, not near Pier!!! Anyways the hotel is called Residenza Farnese, and I booked it myself at [email protected]

Diane- THERE is NOTHING in Civitavecchia except the desolate port-Nothing to do there-

If you have 2 days free, then by all means go into Rome and enjoy it! It is wonderful....

Take Karen's advice on her hotel- No need to blow a bundle but don't cheat yourself out of Rome--

Then get the car service to bring you to the port at the correct boarding time-
There is NO place to wait at the port .

You will find NO COURTESY BUS to take you from ROME to the port as it is an hour and 1/2 ride---

Even the Sheraton Roma, which is outside ROMA(technically) does NOT offer a shuttle bus....

I agree stay in Rome. I got a transfer to the ship from my travel agent and it was the same bus as the ship used for the people staying at their pre-cruise hotel. They give you a tour of the city then take you out to the ship to board. I did not stay at the cruise line hotel I made my own reservations at half the price and bought transfers.

The Marcella is great! Go to hotels in Rome on We walked all over in just a few days before our cruise. It was two years ago and my memory is a little foggy, however I believe we paid around $120 a night(that is for two people not per person like the pre cruise rate is). The view from the patio/terrace is just wonderful. Thinking about it makes me want to return. We flew into Rome and took the train into the city and a taxi to the hotel that was just a few minutes away. I recommend buying a good map before leaving and study it so when you arrive you will be able to find your way around easily! Sherry

Hi Dianne

Take this from a world traveler. Go onto
both the Sherton website or the new
Rome Hilton Hotel. Both are 5 star hotels and offer great rates on their

Heres the deal....learn the hard way.
If you stay downtown, it is truly spectacular. However, you will pay the

Both the Sheraton and Hilton provide
