FYI on Antarctica fuel surcharge
Just posting an FYI: Back in November 2007 or so, we reserved our room on Quark's "Crossing the Circle" cruise for Feb. 2009 and paid a deposit and signed an agreement with them to pay the required funds. I had assumed this locked in the relevant price.
Turns out, not so much. We've just received a letter imposing a fuel surcharge for roughly $60/pppn, which means we'll be paying close to $2,000 more than originally agreed. Apparently this is permitted under the terms and conditions to which I had agreed, although I'm sure I could cancel now if I really wanted to. Since I don't want to cancel, I guess I'm just going to suck it up. Anyway, be warned.

Thanks...I'll stay tuned. In my case, the surcharge isn't due until I make the final payment, which won't be until Nov. 2008, so I assume things could always change between now and then (hopefully for the better).

Thanks for the heads up jgold. I'm traveling the same itinerary as you, but a year later. Let's hope the surcharge somehow goes away or at least lessens. But regardless, I'm confident that the trip will be so amazing that the positives will long outweigh the negative of the surcharge to our bank accounts
I'm looking forward to hearing all about your trip!

Fuel surcharge is now up to $9 per person per day on some cruises lines.
It was not that long ago that they started to charge $5 and people complaint about the lack of notice and they ended up giving a refund when the Government reacted.
Now that they have "given notice", they are now charging $9 to make up for the refund and will probably stayed at $9.
