christmas cruise with kids
We are hoping to take a cruise next year leaving christmas day out of either San Juan or Florida. The kids are 7, 10 and 14. We do not want to take Carnival cruises. We want good food, great ports (at least 5), fun activities for the kids but would prefer not to have a huge ship. Any suggestions?

Boy! You have lots of demands. You can always hope, but...
Cruises would not leave on Christmas Day, usually a few days prior, as Xmas is always a big celebration on board. There are one week cruises: the first celebrates Xmas and the second celebrates New Years. Or if you really want to splurge... take a 2 week cruise.
A one week cruise would not make 5 ports. Too many.
The smaller ships are extremely expensive and for the more mature cruiser. Not a place for the kids, they would be bored.
Your best bet, for the kids, would be on Princess or Royal Caribbean, where there are climbing walls and ice rinks on board. Holland America usually has an older crowd.

Thanks for the info on the boats I did not realize that holland was a moe mature boat. Next year Christmas is on a sat and they will be departures on that day and a few boats do have 5 ports in 7 days. We have been on a few. Just as an FYI.
Which Princess or Royal would you reccommend?

Just to confirm, there are 5 port, 7 day cruises. It would be nice to leave on Christmas Day. When we went, we missed out on one of the good places to shop because we docked on Christmas Day. What a waste if you want to shop in St. Thomas and all the stores are closed. However, the ship we were on had nothing special for Christmas - at least that we noticed but maybe people were making their own Christmas spirit. One more thing, too many people ignore Carnival. We took a Carnival cruise and the food was as good as RC and the ship was fine. Also, they seemed to be more tolerant of kids.

kgn, The ship was the Fascination. We went to St. Thomas, St. Martin, Barbados, Dominica and Martinique. Like I said before, it was a great vacation for the money and with kids. My husband and I have eaten in some of the finest restaurants in the world so we do have something to compare this too. We were pleasantly surprised. We are sailing again this year but on RC because the generous person paying (grandparents) didn't want Carnival. I don't like these ports nearly as much as some others. Have fun.
