Celebrity or QE2?

I am taking my mom on a European cruise in August. We are deciding between Celebrity Galaxy (12-Day Mediteranean) or QE2 (7 Day, Gaelic Getaway). Please give me your thoughts. Sounds like Celebrity is a fave here...but, what about the history of QE2. Help!!

I understand (may be wrong) that on QE2, dining choices are based on what class you booked on the ship -- for example, all the peasant class people dine together, etc.

We did a 12 Day Mediterranean cruise on Celebrity, Millennium. It was great. We just got off a 10 day cruise on Galaxy last November -- It was great. I would go for the Celebrity -- you'll be treated like one.

I've been on Celebrity 3x and QE2 8x, but would recommend that you & Mom go on Celebrity. QE2 is an acquired taste and, while there's certainly history and tradition associated with a QE2 cruise, it doesn't provide the experience most cruisers want (particularly new cruisers). As Budman mentioned, the category cabin you book determines which restaurant you eat in; and the cabins - even those for the finest dining, Queens Grill - are outdated at best. Many are quite small. I always book an upper grade cabin (not Queens) but all the restaurants are average. Entertainment (as in musical shows) is sad; they DO have great lecturers and enrichment sessions though. I think Celebrity would be the better bet - plus, 12 days in the Med sounds great!

Go with QE2!! I was on it when they were filming "Keeping Up Appearances" one particular year and they even had me in one scene with Hyacinth & Richard!! We had a lovely cabin and yes we dined in the "special" dining room. Food was superb and the British offer delightful service! Mom will be impressed! You can always do Celebrity later...........

We have just returned from a fabulous week on the QE2.Very comfortable cabin (P class),wonderful food and ambience, smiling and attentive crew.As for entertainment it definately depends on how old mom is.If she is over 50 then go for the QE2.We are in our early 40s and had our teenage son with us. There was little entertainment for him,the shows, casino, lectures, films etc are aimed at the older cruiser. The experience of sailing on the QE2was more than enough entertainment for us.

Before you book QE2, check their health inspection record. I don't think I'll take any of the Cunnard ships based on that.

FYI:

QE2 was built in 1969.

If you book the QE2--make sure you get the Caronia dining room as it is the better of the midlevel dining areas..

Personally, I would go with Celebrity as there is no class distinction and all are treated equally--Absolutely no snob attitude --

Would MMSF (or anyone else) care to explain HOW one "checks their health inspection records" for this or any other ship?
