When I arrive on the ship - I always get a map (they can be found at the Purser's desk/Guest Relations) and explore the ship. I often take pictures of rooms/lounges/public areas because no one is on the ship yet - I try to be the first one onboard. I have always found it best to get the layout of the ship the first day so that I am not lost throughout the week.

Yes - the pools are open right away - almost everything is. There will be those who go directly to the pool.

Explorer offers internet for .50/minute in their business/internet cafe. Or, you can bring your laptop and have unlimited internet for $100/for the week. If you use the internet cafe - make sure you have a web based email that you can check.

Explorer is an awesome ship - Enjoy her!

Barbara, have you checked out the information on the Explorer at the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL) website? If not, here's their website address:

http://www.royalcaribbean.com/asp/default.asp

Then Click on "Ships" - left column and you'll then be able to click on any of their ships for detailed information.

Another website that is totally dedicated to cruising is:

www.cruisemates.com

Even tho' you can use the pools immediately, remember that there is a mandatory fire drill that first late afternoon. You will have to go to room, put on life jackets, go to your particular station, etc. So, just be prepared.
I also do what Theresa does, get the detailed map of the ship and familiarize myself; it really helps preventing getting lost quite so much.
Don't know the Explorer personally but I believe all the new ships have computers with e-mail -- for an extra charge, of course.
Your travel agent (if you used one) can get specific answers to your questions with just a phone call; that's their job and the service you pay for.

Have a great time....I just love cruising.

P.S.
1. There will be a one page newsletter delivered to your room each evening detailing all activities for the next day.
2. Your cabin TV will have a special channel devoted to the ship and its activities as well.
3. As soon as you get to your cabin, count the hangers in your closet. I often find they don't have enough on the rod. Ask your room steward for more _right away_; they go fast. Actually, I now usually take a few of my own..especially pant hangars. My husband thinks I'm crazy but it works for me -- he's also been known to 'borrow' just one or two for his stuff!

Sorry for my comments on Explorer's Internet options; Theresa covered it perfectly.
Another good cruise only website is:

www.cruiseopinion.com

You can click on RCCL, then on Explorer; get another listing of specifications along with former cruiser's written reviews.

Since this is your first cruise, if you have any interest...take advantage of the opportunity to take a tour of the ship's galley (the kitchen). You will be in awe of the facilities and all the staff required to deliver those thousands of meals.
