which island?
my husband & I would like to try a Caribbean vacation. We are stumped as to which island to go to...safety is first and foremost for us. We are in our mid sixties and are looking for a nice quiet beach vacation. ..maybe an occasional hike and a visit to a nearby town for some shopping and restaurants. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!\

You've tagged this thread "U.S. Virgin Islands". Are those the only islands you are considering?
If so, then maybe this will help:
St. Thomas is the most populated and busiest island. It has the best shopping and most restaurants.
St. John is the least populated island, only one "real" town, very little shopping and the most hiking (3/4's of the island is a national park). It is the most expensive of the three.
St. Croix has a more rural feel than St. Thomas but it has 2 large towns with some shopping. Hiking is better than on St. Thomas but not as good as St. John.
All three have nice plenty of nice beaches.
If you are considering other islands in the Caribbean we need to know:
When will you be traveling?
Where are you traveling from?
How long a trip are you planning?
What is your budget for airfare, accommodations, food and activities? Give specific dollar range not some nebulous term like "Affordable", "Not too expensive" or "Won't break the bank" as without a point of reference we have no idea what they mean to you.
