My husband and I want to go somewhere in the Caribbean the week of Labor Day; any suggestions?

Everyone has their favorite island, or at least their favorite type of island.

What do you want to do? What kind of place do you want to stay at? Budget? Worried about hurricanes?

You need to give these very knowledgable folks some more info.

I'm leaning toward Puerto Rico; flights from Chicago are really cheap now. I'd be willing to splurge on lodging.

My husband is interested in snorkeling. I'm more interested in laying around the beach with a book, but I love hiking and exploring. We also like fine dining.

And yes, I am worried about hurricanes!

Tauny, St. John via St. Thomas should be easy to get to from Chicago as well. St. John has excellent shore snorkeling and very beautiful beaches. There are many hiking trails as well. I'll be on St. John from 08/21 - 08/30. You may want to rent a villa or you may want to look at Gallows Point.

The USVI isn't too bad to get to from Chicago. It doesn't have the unique charm that some of the other islands have, but your husband would enjoy the snorkeling. Lots of very nice beaches for you to enjoy your beach reads.
