Where to find a villa to rent
Does anyone have any experience with renting a villa using vrbo.com? And/or are there other reputable sites to look at? We are looking for a 3 bedroom villa - seems many are bigger or smaller...
Also has anyone stayed at Calicaribe (http://www.vrbo.com/284227)? If so, how was it?
Thanks in advance!

Finding a villa on St John is perhaps one of the most challenging tasks of traveling there. Mainly because there are so many good ones. Here is a review on Calicaribe from last year:

If you haven't done so, decide on a general area that you plan to stay ( Cruz Bay or the Coral Bay area ) and focus on those.
Another thought, if you find one larger, inquire if you can rent it as a 3 bedroom.

Another site is www.vacationvistas.com Have used them multiple times. Most villa rental companies base the rate on the number of bedrooms being used but some are based on the number of people. You have to ask questions based on your needs. I took a girl's vacation with my BFF and used VRBO that trip. I explained that we would be using both bedrooms. The owner was OK with that and I even got a discount because be rented for 11 days.

We've rented through vrbo.com on a number of islands, as well as in Europe, and have always been really pleased with the results. It is much easier if you have a sense of what types of amenities, etc. are really important to you, and if you ask lots of questions. Some of the owners who advertise on vrbo also work with property managers, so that can sometimes be confusing. Also, many properties are represented by more than one agency or manager. We found a great Coral Bay rental through www.privatehomesvi.com, and the agent, Mary-Phyllis couldn;t have been nicer. The villa, Island Horizons, is no longer represented by them (www.islandhorizonsvi.com) but it was great for our family and the pictures on the website don't come close to doing it justice.
Final piece of advice: always ask for the best possible rate or let the owner/agent know what your target budget is, even if the quoted price on the listing is a bit higher. Very often it's possible to get a discounted rate, especially if demand is low during the time you're traveling.
Good luck!
