What to Pack??
Hello,
I would love to receive recomendations from any of you expert Caribbean travlers. My wife and I will be in Barbados and St Lucia for a total of 12 days and can't decide what to take.
We have the obvious covered, shorts, swim wear and underwear. Would love suggestions on quantity of items, the not so obvious, etc. We will be flying in to the islands.

-water shoes - little rubberized slipper like shoes to protect your feet from sharp things on the beach.
-good sunblock and a hat.
-take 1/2 the underwear out.
-assume you know not to try taking anything greater than 3 ozs gels/liquids in carry on and that you MUST use a quart size zip-loc.
-1 sweater or sweatshirt at most.
-put one bathing suit in carry-on lest they loose your bag for a day.
-small flashlight
-empty zip-locs for your last day bathing suit
- on the plane i wear a tank top under my winter clothes, zip off leg pants and have sandals in my carry-on. when i get off the plane i am dressed for the island.
not sure of crane dining dress code. may need a casual jacket for dinner. summer (spaghetti strap style?) dresses for new wife.
if you plan to snorkel buy a mask & snorkel at home. fins are cumbersome to pack and are sometimes rentable but that's a bit of an inconvenience, especially as you are changing islands.
i've not been to st. lucia but as i understand it rodney bay is a newer developement and has some nightlife.
i have freinds who have a timeshare at windjammer landing (not sure how close to rodnery bay it is) and they love it, so you might look there.

For Barbados you do not need any water shoes.
Daytime is casual everywhere. Evenings at most restaurants (other than extremely casual) men will need long pants and a collared shirt, women - sundresses or dressy pants and top. Usually jackets are not required.

I post this list that I got from Ray's SXM website, may be of interest.
Major credit card(s) like Visa or MC and an ATM card (Cirrus, Star, Plus, Interlink networks)
Call your CC company and tell them about your travel plans to avoid any embarassing/inconvenient hold on your account.
plenty of suntan lotion with a min of 15 SPF
chapstick with sunscreen
towel clips (large chip bag clips work ok, too)
a hat for the beach
at least one bottle of your favorite bug spray
meat tenderizer (e.g. Adolphs) in a film capsule (works great on bug bites)
a couple of candles and a small flashlight (maglite)
a couple of new pocketbooks for the beach or for a lazy day @ "home"
a good 35mm camera with extra batteries and a few films and/or a good digital
camera with plenty of image storage capacity
bring a corkscrew and a bottle opener if you don't have them on your Swiss Army pocket knife
remember to pack either one in your checked luggage and not in your carry-on
a few of your favorite music CDs
a soft-sided cooler for the Caribs and Heinekens
some ziploc bags for the cheese, crackers, KFC pieces etc. you may also put in that cooler
a thermos for a sunrise mimosa @ your favorite Beach
feminine products (if necessary)
nail clippers
a small calculator to help you with your currency conversions
a small journal book to jot down tidbits for posterity or a trip report
a couple of pens (have one handy on the plane to fill out the immigration and/or customs forms)
How can I protect myself against mosquito bites?
Use vitamin B, garlic, mosquito milk, gin bite balm (in tube) and/or meat tenderizer (e.g. Adolphs)

Bring any drug store/deal breaker type stuff that you'll think you'll need including immodium.
We ran all over Barbados one year looking for swimmers ear for my hubby and couldn't find it anywhere.

Pack as light as possible, which is really easy for us women.
Leave all your bras and hose at home. All they do is get in the way and take up space. You will be on the beach most of the time anyway. And the freedom is great.
Sun Dresses work way better than shorts and tee's. There is no place a women can't go in a sundress, so you never have to worry about dress codes. I find 4 or 5 are plenty for a week, as I can easily wear each one twice since I am on the beach most of the day.
Three bikini bottoms are plenty for the beach; that way I have a dry one each day, and can even change after lunch if I feel like it. I always skip the tops, which has never been a problem anywhere we have been. (OK, I will bring one, just in case, but it never gets worn. Also, a tee-shirt can be handy as a beach coverup, but one is enough.) I was a bit nervous the first time I went for a drink at the beach bar with no top, but after the first time it is really no big deal, and I can guarantee you will get good service!
Sunscreen: Bring plenty, at least 2 bottles; more in the summer.
Other than personal items that pretty much does it. Believe me you will appreciate the light suitcase when trekking through their primitive airports, and its sure nice to be able to pack and unpack in a few miunutes instead of hours.
