I used the Snorkeling Guide to Marine Life (Florida Caribbean Bahamas) by Paul Humann, Ned DeLoach. I found it very useful. Good colorful pictures of the marine life plus details on identifying marks.
Paul Humann also has a Reef Set series.

The Humann books are the best but the Reef Set is expensive and large. I've not seen the snorkeling guide. However, they also publish mini-books of the Reef Set with pictures of fish and names without the long descriptions in the big book. The best thing about these liitle books is that they are on waterproof paper and can be carried right into the ocean with you. I carry 2 in my BC pocket whenever I dive. Check out your local dive shop for them - I haven't seen them on Amazon or anything like that.

Also make sure you get the Atlantic/Caribbean version - I think there are separate books for the Pacific region.

Hi Christie. You can order the book directly from the publisher. www.fishid.com
Looks like I'll have to get some of these mini waterproof ones for myself too.
