I have eaten at both, here is what you may expect at both:
The Wharf, although geared towards the tourist, has an amazing atmosphere. It sits directly on the water, the lighting is very low key but beautiful, and it's a white tablecloth type of setting. The view is spectacular, (especially at sunset). There is a harpist playing to add to the mood. Probably one of the nicer settings for a restaurant on the island.
The food is very good, but not truely the best in my opinion. I'd give it a B+. Service has always been excellent. It is very expensive here.
Reef Grill, is on the beach, but set back behind Royal Palms beach bar. It is nestled on a very nice patio, with a nice tropical feel to it. Although you can't quite see the water, it's still has a great feel to it. Not as fancy as the Wharf, but very welcoming.
The food here is what sets it apart from the Wharf. We feel that this is one of the best meals you will have in GC. The most popular dish is their signature Chilean Sea Bass which is absolutely fabulous. They also do a shrimp eggroll appetizer that is incredible. You can also expect great service with a very genuine smile here. It definitely feels less 'stuffy' than the Wharf.
All in all, you will probably hear mixed reviews of the Wharf, but very rarely hear anything bad about the Reef Grill. The Reef Grill is the only place we visit twice on our trips to GC.
Although you will most likely enjoy both, our vote goes for the Reef Grill. And just to confuse you a little more, There's a small intimate place downtown on the water called Smuggler's Cove that shouldn't be missed (trust me). The food & service will undoubtedly rival the Reef Grill.

Thanks Scott. Actually, we have Smugglers Cove already on our list of must-eat-ats!
We are getting married on the beach on GC and want to take our family/friends who come down out to eat afterwards...would you suggest Reef or Smuggler's?
Thanks!

Kristen,
scratch the Wharf off your list.. The food is very mediocre at best. It was the only place in GC I was disappointed in..Reef Grill we went to the first andn last night because we loved it so much.. Smuggler's Cove is great, but more of a romantic restaurant for a couple not ideal for a group..

I agree with Melody, The Reef Grill would be my choice for taking a group. It's also a good choice for the group as you can have some drinks after dinner at Royal Palms beach bar, and dance to soem live music right there.
Smuggler's is indeed a very romantic setting, and should be enjoyed by yourselves. Two suggestions for Smugglers: The jerk duck appetizer is excellent, and their signature loster stuffed filet mignon for main course is to die for. Enjoy!!
