Westin St. John

Hi everyone! We're planning our 2nd trip to St. John, and we've found out that we can stay at the Westin at no cost to us! (Thanks to Vacation Club points!) I've heard mixed things, but I'd like some reviews/responses from fellow Fodorites. I figure I can't pass up a free hotel, but would still like some feedback. TIA!!

We stayed at the westin st john - had a 2 level 2 bedroom villa which was perfect for the family. you do have to walk a bit to the main building and beach from there. If you're in their vacation club area, its a further walk. restaurants are nice - be sure to check if they are closed for private parties ahead of time. Nice beach, nice pool. we usually stay at starwood properties and this met our expectations.

Free? You already know how wonderful the rest of the island is... who cares where you lay your fun-wearied head? The Westin has those terrific Heavenly Beds, airconditioning, all the bells and whistles of a resort, huge pool, good restaurants... AND IT'S ON ST. JOHN!!! We love the Westin. If you're considering it as a honeymoon spot or if you're opposed to the presence of kids, you may need to look into it a bit further. But really, what a great opportunity. I wouldn't think twice IMO. The long walks are also not usually necessary as there's almost always a resort golfcart-type vehicle coming by and happy to give you a ride. Hey, it's a big resort. Go for it. Have a great time.

I agree with Tuxedocat. It's FREE! Seriously, it's a nice resort, not great, but nice. The grounds are beautiful. The pool is nice enough (nothing special about it in my opinion). The beach is a disappointment but frankly you're on an island that has beautiful beaches. It'd be a shame to just stay at the resort and not go spend each day on a different beach.
Please know that it is a family resort so if you go during the summer or holiday breaks, be ready for lots of screaming kids. That may matter to you if this is an adult trip.
Have a great time.

Just adding to say: we know we're going to spend much of our time exploring the rest of the island, enjoying the many gorgeous beaches, and hanging at the many fun & delicious bars & restaurants...so I am ready to GO! (We've been to Disney a ton of times, so we're so used to the kid factor, even if we don't have our own!
