Villas at Silver Sands, Trelawny
Does anyone have any experience with renting a cottage or a villa at Silver Sands? I have stayed at Sandals Montego Bay and loved it but I am not looking for a resort rather a more Jamaican experience, this time with kids.

Silver Sands is not really a 'Jamaican'
experience: a great beach, a secure location but more like Amelia Island or one of the gated communities in Florida.
For kids, perfect -- and outside the hustle and bustle of MoBay and Sandals which is 'fake' Jamaica. For a more true Jamaican place, see VILLA KELSO
which is in Duncans/Trelawney,set above
on the hillside overlooking Silver Sands with beach privileges at the beach club as well as Great Braco Stables. See it and Miss P's Place at Silver Sands on www.jamaicaescapes.com

i have stayed at silver sands our group occupied summertime, beachhaven and endless summer...great place for kids and a much better option than the AI properties...i think you've made an excellent choice
nice beach front and personal cook/housekeeper
you do have to bring your own party to silver sands and no real planned activities there but a good location to see sights because either direction there is something to do...mobay or ochie
day trip for us were
martha bra/glistering waters (kids loved this outing)
and another day we went to ochie
dunns river/fern gully shopping and lunch at evita's
another option would be to take advantage of the free/low cost shuttles they offer to various sights
if you have ?? email me at [email protected]
oh i would recommend booking through www.silver-sands.com

Its, me, FuzzyBee again....
We (family of six, myself, 35, husband, 40, sister, 45, Mother, and my two children, a girl, 3 and boy, 8) booked a week in one of the Silver Sands Villas, Je Suis Content, during the week of Sept. 4-11, 2004. All of the other reviews here have some good points, so I will try to address some of the points that they missed. Silver sands is a collection of privately owned beachfront and/or ocean view cottages and vacation homes located east of Montego bay in the Trelawny Parrish. The nearest town is Falmouth. As the villas are privately owned, each reflects the owner's tastes. Most are decorated nicely, but may not be up to the latest fashions. We stayed in Je Suis Content, a villa on the cliff. It is a 3br, 3ba villa with a nice veranda for lounging and a pool. The bedrooms have a/c, but the house does not. We had breakfast on the veranda every day. Try the different carribean foods, our housekeeper was an excellent cook. She will serve you well, just leave the dishes in the sink after dinner. If you intend to stay in Silver Sands, be sure to find out where your villa is located in relation to the beach. If you are handicapped, elderly, or just don't want to do a lot of walking, be sure to get a home closer to the entrance and beach. The farther you go up the hill, the better the view, but you must be in pretty good shape because you will have to do a LOT of walking (about a 20 min walk to the beach from the homes at the end of the development). You must take the road or steps to the beach and there are a lot of them. Also, all of the homes are not beachfront. They all have fabulous views, but the ones on the front edge have the best views. The walkie talkies are a great idea, we brought ours, and that made communications easier. Make sure you do not overpack, as the housekeepers (you should have at least two) do the laundry every day. For a weeks stay, you really need only 3 or 4 outfits, incl, the children. Be sure to discuss your wants and needs with your housekeeper asap. We asked our maid to come in early as we are early risers. She then would leave early. If you like certain things, be sure to tell her. Fresh fish and lobster is available every day really really cheap. Also, vendors can come if you wish to buy things, as the gift shop is not open in the low season. Other than that you must go into town to shop. There is no night life to speak of, if you are looking for that. There is a game room, and a lovely patio on the beach, plus changing facilities, a bar, and restrooms, all well maintained. The beach is raked by hand every morning. The water was crystal clear, great for snorkeling. Bring your gear. There is a man available who will take you out further to snorkel or to fish. Bring plenty of sunblock, even if you are darker skinned. You will burn easily here. If you have children make sure you bring toys, etc to keep them occupied, however, Je Suis had games, movies, books, and water toys available. Just keep in mind there is not a lot to do and not a lot of activies. There is a beautiful gazebo at the end of a jetty that is great for a romantic interlude or a wedding. There are lifeguards on the beach. Everyone there is extremely friendly, incl the housekeepers. If you arrange excursions, be sure to do the Martha Brae, Cranbrook Flower Forest (simply beautiful), amongst others. If you need more info, feel welcome to contact me. I have pictures as well. Please keep in mind that Jamaica is a 3rd world country. Do not expect American luxury standards, although I could not imagine staying in the resorts after staying at Silver Sands. There are just so many advantages at SS. You will definiely get plenty of rest and relaxation, and the housekeepers will absolutely spoil you to death. We loved it and are already planning to return, as hurricane Ivan ran us home early.

Yes, we did just make it out in time. We had not been listening to the news (who listens to the news on vacation?), so imagine our surprise when Angela, Silver Sands' resident manager, came to our villa and said, "oh, don't mind me, we are just measuring the windows for plywood for the hurricane, and by the way, you'd better leave tomorrow or else you will be stuck here fore 3 weeks"!!! So, we had to cut our vacation 2 days short, but it was definitely worth it.
