Town of Punta Cana???
Is Punta Cana a resort area and/or is it actually a town. I read somewhere that one of the resorts was close to the town of Punta Cana. If this is an actual town...what's there?? Possibly going to Punta Cana in a few months and trying to decide on reasonably priced AI resort..Thanks for you info

Punta Cana is an area, not a town. The main city nearby is Higuey. The beaches of Punta Cana are beautiful (east coast) and the Dominican people are friendly. You might also want to consider La Romana on the south coast. The beaches are beautiful, the water calmer than Punta Cana, snorkeling is very good (often right from the beach) and the beautiful sunsets are exquisite. Since it faces south you won't be moving your lounge chair every half hour as you will always be facing the warm sun. My advise is to check out reviews of the resorts. There are various sites that offer this from real travelers who will tell you the truth. Some things are a matter of personal opinion and taste so with that in mind, a bit of research will give you peace of mind and more of what you are looking for in your vacation. La Romana, La Romana..lol. We are going back for the fourth time in a month..We will probably take a bus from Bayabe there where we will hit the flea market and the supermarket to buy coffee beans and pure vanilla right off the shelf.. there is a lovely zolca in town and last time there bought an ice cream and sat and watched the students from the local school on their lunch break. If you need more information write me at [email protected]. The reason we chose to go again to La Romana is many other items to do outside the resort..RENTING A CAR IS NOT AN OPTION.. There is Altos de Chavon, Kandella plus the little town..

Thanks for the posting. Did alot of asking and can't find anyone who actually went to LaRomana. Decided to go to Punta Cana this year and maybe by next vacation the research will steer us to LaRomana...the postings on various websites indicate a beautiful area but I'm kinda afraid to take a chance seeing how I don't actually know of anyone who even knows anyone who went there!! Thanks again.

I have been to LaRomana and you can talk to many who have been at the following link:

They frequently post links to photos and will answer any question you might have about the area, various resorts, etc.
