Suggestions for group transfers/transportation in Turks and Caicos

We're taking my elderly MIL and other family members to Provo in November. None of us feel that comfortable driving on the wrong side of the road, so I'm wondering if it's possible to make arrangements with some of the local taxi drivers for nightly transfers to restaurants etc. There will be six of us traveling.

When we last visited, going rate back and forth from West Bay seemed to be $30 for the two of us. OUCH. Do you think it's possible to get discounted rates for a group? Are we being big babies for efusing to drive on the wrong side of the road?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you like the taxi driver that takes you to resort, you can always get a card and call him each time.

It will be costly, and I doubt they negotiate. Always charge per person regardless if same family or not.

If you go the taxi route, I highly recommend renting a phone or buying one down there, it's hard to depend on restaurants calling you a taxi, then waiting for it.

In the long run taxi will cost a lot more. But I don't think you're wimpy for not driving on the other side, i was nervous my first time! ;-)

But it is mostly straight roads and short distances. Yu could always pretending to be on a US highway riding the passing lane! Just like everybody does anyway. The hardest part are the round a bouts.

Thanks, blamona!

We never had a problem with the restaurants calling a taxi for us. I am just concerned about the roundtrip rate back and forth from West Bay, since it was pretty expensive last time. What do you think is a reasonable rate for the six of us each night? I was hoping NOT to spend $30 per couple. Do you have any particular recommendations for taxi drivers? I might like to contact a few of them to see what they would charge. Thanks very much!!

I don't know any taxi personally, I always rent a car.

Charge depends on where you are going. If the going rate was $30 p couple, then you can expect $90 for 6. They don't usually negotiate.

It is cheaper to rent a van.

If they do negotiate, it's not by much, but you can try. I'd give you the taxi association number, but they never answer!

You're right! But I don't think my SIL wants to drive a van for six on the other side of the road! Plus my 83-year-old MIL will be a very nervous passenger!!

To drive from West Bay Club to the Grace Bay hub as you know is not far, single lane road( not 2 lane like the Highway)Plus
Grace way Gourmet is on Grace Bay Rrd too ( again no Higway needed) It will cost much less, none of the per person each way rates! Believe me it is so easy and not a problem to adjust to the other side...

i suggest you taxi to west bay from airport. get a van the next day & try it out - without the full gang for the first drive. i actually like driving on the left side - but it always takes a day to get used to it. my group agrees that all should feel free to speak up if one of us appears to be heading for the wrong lane. anyway if it turns out no one is comfortable driving, turn the car in & go back to using taxis. you'll save so much by renting & would be able to do a bit of touring around.
plus - it's not like the locals don't know you're a tourist in a rental car. they know to watch out for you & want to bump cars less than you do as they need theirs to work & repair/new cars are slow to happen. 45 mph is top speed limit & that's only on the leeward highway (main rd) 35 most other places like road wbc is on.

Thanks, Caribzack and Virgina,

I think we'll have to give it a try. None of us wants to spend nearly $100 just to go back and forth to dinner!

And with a van there's so much more! Check out the amazing Chalk Sound, where the turquoise is so neon it glows. Check out Sapadilla And Taylor Bays, shallow for hundreds of yards (83 year old will love it just sitting in the water). Then you don't have to decide things all the time, a van gives so much more freedom. Can go back and forth to supermarket or shops, and gives freedom to family of not having to plan everybody every time, easier for freedom if someone wants to go shopping there stay put.

You're absolutely right, Blamona. Still, it's a little scary, but we'll have to get over it. Last time my husband's hip was very bad, so we never made it to Chalk sound or Sapadilla and Taylor Bays. Sounds heavenly!
