STX Buccaneer cottages?
We've just booked a family cottage at the Buccaneer for our upcoming trip. (couple with 2 small children) Has anyone seen them? I'm having a hard time finding any pics or descriptions (other than the resort website blurb) about them. I haven't heard much negative feedback about anything at this resort, so am not particularly worried. Just looking for a little extra reassurance!

Try travelhop.com. The Buccaneer looks lovely. I'd love to take my family here. The only drawback for me seems to be the fact that some posts have described the beaches there to be small. Really nice, but small. What are your thoughts on that? Or is it no big deal?

I stayed at the Buccaneer last March with my husband and two kids (3 and 7) We chose the Doubloon accomodation---right on the beach, large room with two queen beds and a built in bed under a window---beautiful accomodation with huge private terrace and marble bath---great sunset view. The family cottages looked very nice---up the hill from the beach so that they're between the beach below and the restaurant above. We loved our stay there----kid's program for ages 4 and above but babysitting for younger kids---it's rather informal so at times Jose (the kids' program leader) would scoop up my three year old and take him walking to collect shells---just to give me a break!!! The beaches are nice, altho not the most spectacular in the Carribean---Buck Island is beautiful.
E-mail is you'd like with other questions.

Linda - I may be emailing you in the near future with some questions about the child activities and dining. I appreciate the input! Hoping that the "hill" doesn't make for an inconvenient walk to the beach, etc. (our kids are 1 and 4). Thanks!

Dear Lynn,
I can comment on the Buc and the family cottages as we have been there three times and are going again in Feburary (hooray!). Our children were 1 1/2 and 4 on our first visit...this year they will be 6 1/2 and 9.

The family cottages are not as luxurious as the Doubloons but they are quite nice. We prefer them for two reasons. We like having two separate rooms with two separate t.v.s (Means we sometimes can sleep later than the kids). And if you book Rooms 168, 169, 170 or 171, the view of the Caribbean from your patio is to die for.

One room (the master) has a king sized bed, day bed in a window and a comfy chair, tv, minifridge, safe, coffeemaker, closets. The other room has twin beds, tv and closets. Bathroom is not luxurious but quite nice. Extra sink between rooms is a plus. The floors are tiled (very Caribbean-like) so it is not "plush" like the Doubloons. But it is quite nice. Your patio has a table for four and two chaise lounges. One of my favorite things to do is to sit drinking coffee in the early morning hours. Beautiful.

You will LOVE the Buccaneer. The beaches are plenty big. We go during one of their busiest weeks (February school vacation) and we can get to the beach as late as noontime and still get a chaise lounge. The main pool isn't huge but it's rarely crowded. That's because there is a real mix of ages and interests at the Buc (older guests golf and play tennis and don't use the pool much).

I could go on and on about activities, restaurants, etc. Send me an email if you'd like. Let me know your kids ages and when you are going. And if your kids are willing to go to Jose's FREE kids camp, they are in for a treat. The earlier post about his ability to cajole even the shyest child is absolutely true.

I just returned Sunday from St. Croix. We rented a villa/house down the road from the Bucaneer but used their beach facilities (for a fee) twice in the two weeks we stayed. The beach is calmer than on the other side of the island. Yes, it is small and has a rather quick drop-off. This beach had the most smaller children of all the beaches we went to - about 7 of them. They rent floats and the kids had a ball with them. We had a 7 yr old with us for 4 days of the trip. It was his favorite. The restaurants were good as well. There is is also a volleyball and basketball court right there at the beach.
Theresa
Thanks to all! We're even more excited about the trip now. Carol, your preference for the seperated rooms in the family cottages is exactly our reason for booking one (even though they may not be the most luxurious). We have a 1yo and a 4yo and don't wish to have the same sleeping schedule as they do! Also, I'm really encouraged by the reports of Jose and the kids' facility.

??? Do I need to request a specific room number? Will some of the cottages not have a carribbean view??

I will be emailing some of you with other questions. Thanks again!!

Was just browsing for some new Caribbean info and saw your recent post to my Buccaneer message from last spring. I did write a pretty lengthy trip report - check it out, dated March 2003 (do a search for Buccaneer and it'll come up). Since my kids were the same age as yours, you might be interested in my comments. I still feel that the family cottages were a great value and we wouldn't have liked the "single room" concept of the Doubloons as much (althought they sound much more luxurious). Have a terrific time. It's so hard to find that perfect resort - not too big but with great service and family-friendly. Let us know how it goes. If you have any other questions, post again and I'll check the board. - Lynn
