how wonderful to hear that you've big hearted enough to adopted dogs from other countries.

I'm still haunted by the puppy in Turkey that had a badly infected front leg, the local shopkeepers were keeping an eye on him and threw him scraps and gave him water but how I wish we'd gone the extra mile and taken him to the vets. At the time I thought I was a cat person (we have 4) but since acquiring 2 terriers i now realise I'm just an animal person.

BTW, Can Mrs ronjrich please take home the toiletries

I saw a few stray dogs in Aruba..but not a problem with alot of them there.
One of them sticks out in my mind..she would just lay in the middle of the sidewalk in Oranjestad where people would steadly walk and step over her..she had to have puppies somewhere..judging by her nipples.
She looked like she had not had anything to eat in a while..so we give her some left over McDonalds.
I felt so bad for that scruffy little girl.

Now this is curious... I was just in Rincon Puerto Rico with my mother, a compulsive dog-adopter. She started feeding what we thought was a stray -- it wasn't starving looking but it was filthy and very needy and it seemed desperate for love and attention.

Then we were told by a rather angry local that there is apparently a problem with well-meaning gringos going down there and stealing local people's dogs.

So there may be another side to some stories...

Go into a local supermarket and walk down the pet aisle.One whole side is devoted to cat food and cat products..the other side devoted to dogs..then even in this small city within a mile of each other are two pet suppy stores that specialize in foods (special dog cookies), toys, beds, leashes, toys for cats, ferrets, mice..etc. Within the last month I've been fortunate to buy at a ridiculous price thanks to the manager of this one particular pet chain...animal toys, dishes, supplies among other things that were being closed out of this store. The toys were just donated today to our local dog rescue for their auction and cat toys, dishes, etc. to a local group that deals with feral cats.

I just moved to Puerto Rico with my boyfriend and have been heartbroken by the stray situation here. Not only have I taken in one cat - but I've started work with a famous Puerto Rican playwright that live in my neighborhood to try and vaccinate and neuter/spay the number of stray cats that live just two doors down on an abandoned piece of property. But we are in dire need of people willing to take in strays. I think the consciousness in the continental U.S. lends itself more to finding a home for these animals. Taking strays off the streets doesn't seem to be a trend here.

Anyway, in searching the web for ways to help the kittens that I'm trying to find a home for, I came across this site, and am appealing to anyone in the States and can make any connections to find home for about 4-8 kittens, 4 teenage cats, and 1 or 2 adult cats.

All these cats will be spayed/neutered and be vaccinated. We would even pay the cost of the pets traveling to you. We just need to find them homes. That is where the struggle lies here in Puerto Rico.

Anyway, I appreciate any help I can get. I've also managed to rescue 5 dogs and Save-A-Sato is sheltering them. If anyone can contribute to the cost of those dogs (which cost $150 a piece to stay in the shelter), please contact me and I can give you the number of a Save-A-Sato person. I'm unemployed at the moment and the people who said they would sponsor those dogs backed out of their offer. Yikes!
