Puerto Rico
I have taken several solo trips in the U.S., to major cities, but was wondering if Puerto Rico seems safe for a solo female traveler? I was thinking of staying in Old San Juan and then probably do organized tours to the rain forest or other places, if offered.
Any thoughts on safety? Is it too couples-oriented?
Assuming it is safe, any recommendations? I'm mostly interested in the history and natural beauty--not much of a golfer or beach bum. I've just always had the desire to go there.
Thanks for your help!

I've been to Puerto Rico many times and felt safe walking around the old quarter by myself at night. I would take caution like normally in dark areas. Granted these times were when the cruise ships were in and it was very busy in town. I think that is most likely everyday in puerto rico though.
It's a beautiful place and I loved old san juan. Oh I so wish I could remember the name of the hotel that is a casino as well. I think that's the best place to stay. ha ha.
I recommend going totally!!! Out of all I've seen of the Caribbean I would say it's top 5 and I've seen alot.
Good Luck

I went to PR on my own in 1994, and on a trip I put together myself, and I felt safe. My little pension had a great concierge, and so I recommend you check with your front desk about resources, day trips, groups, local and distance drivers. I hired a driver/guide for the day to El Yunque and also he took me to the airport. I love Old San Juan, the fortress is fascinating, the food is good- have a cubano, you can do your own pina colada taste test(they are not sickly sweet as they can be in the US), and definitely see El Yunque. I took a group day trip - guided boat trip and had some of the best snorkeling ever. Also, even tho you might dismiss a ferry trip across to Bacardi as tourist fare, being on the water on a hot day is just the ticket. And when I was there, they had a beautiful outdoor bar under massive white canopy overlooking the bay. A wonderful way to wile away an afternoon.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies!! I'm glad I checked backed here again. And the Bacardi outing sounds fun--I will definitely add that to my list.
I'm considering PR for next March as an end-of-winter escape, but I haven't booked anything yet. Your reassurance has been very helpful, though.
