St. Thomas to BVI's

My wife and I will be staying in St. Thomas in early July and in addition to a daysail, we are wanting to go to the BVI's for a day. Right now, we are thinking of taking the ferry to Tortola and renting a car/jeep for the day in order to see the entire island. Does this sound like a good plan, or are there ways to do this that would work better? Right now we are planning one day on a daysail and probably one day just hanging out at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef where we are staying.

Another question: I have noticed some mention the New Horizons daysail. Does this boat go to Virgin Gorda (The Baths)? I've seen people mention that it does, but their web site does not seem to indicate that.

Thanks!

The New Horizon took us to the BVI(Baths-Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and a few other stops). Personally, I would suggest St John for a day trip over Tortola. JMHO

Thanks for the reply. Is the New Horizon boat you took the sailboat? For some reason I was thinking you needed a powerbaot to get all the way to Virgin Gorda in one day.

You need to take a powerboat to get from STT or St. John to Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke and back in the same day because it is a fair amount of sea to cover. We took New Horizons II from STT and had a great time.

When we were in St. Thomas four months ago, one of the ferry companies (I've already forgotten which one!) had a special package which included round-trip ferry to Tortola, 4WD rental vehicle while there, and lunch. It was cheaper than buying these items separately.

Our favorite spots on Tortola were Smuggler's Cove, Cane Garden Bay, and Brewer's Bay.
