St. Thomas & St. John's
My family and I are going on a cruise in April and will be stopping at St. Thomas. (Docking at 8:00 am, Leaving at 5:00 pm)Some in our party have already been to St. Thomas twice, so would like to see St. John.
Is it totally unrealistic to think that we would have time to take a boat over to St. John, rent a car, and drive the North Shore and Center line road, and still have time to take the boat back to St. Thomas and do a little shopping? That's what we're tossing around doing while were there, but I'm afraid that the drive around the island of St. John won't leave us any time to shop in St. Thomas. What's a good amount of time to allow to drive around St. John to get a good overview of the island since our time is so limited. Thanks for any replys!

Jill, one of my fondest (and first) memories of St. Johns is taking the ferry over from St. Thomas where our cruise boat had docked for the day. We didn't have much of an option for shopping because most of the shops for closed for Easter Sunday! You don't need to rent a car on St. Johns, a taxi can take you to whereever you want to go - if you've never been to Trunk bay, that would be my recommendation. The shops in St. John are actually much nicer in quality than the junk and tee shirt shops on St. Thomas. They also have jewelry and artisian shops. Stop at Caneel Bay and check out their shop and beaches. We were so impressed, we returned to St. Johns twice again, each time to spend entire week there. We still had plenty of time on our first visit to return to the ship. Have a great time.

Poor Jill, You asked a perfectly fine question and everyone get's upset and goes off on a tangent. BTW, I got the ass joke right off the bat - very funny! Ok, to answer your question, skip St. Thomas. Take a ferry from St. Thomas harbor (where your ship docks) to Cruz Bay. It's about a 35 - 40 minute ride, if I remember correctly. Once on St. John, take a taxi to Caneel Bay Resort. This is a little known secret! You will basically have the beach to yourself and it is heavenly! The water is crystal clear and the sand is perfect. Take the Cruz Bay ferry back to Red Hook if you want to take a 20 minute taxi/tour of St. Thomas. Have a great time!

The ferry between Red Hook and Cruz Bay runs every hour on the hour until 11pm from Cruz Bay and 12midnight from Red Hook. The ferry from Charlotte Amalie runs every couple of hours starating at 9am. Last one from Cruz Bay is 3:45 to CA and last from Charlotte Amalie is 5:30.

Hi!
Make sure you get up early enough to be one of the first off the boat to maximize your time. We like to ferry to St. John's and beach for the first part of the day before the crowds come then eat lunch at Mongoose Junction ( nice shopping /restaurant area you will see on your way to the beach). Then you know how much time you have left to shop on St. John or head back to st. Thomas. Also right off the dock in St. Johns is a little shack that sells the BEST margaritas. I think I had a mango one last time. Hope this helps a little

Jill, my husband and I attempted to do what you are suggesting and have a few comments. First, St. John is worth the time and effort. It is a beautiful island. I will agree with the others, that St. Thomas is very "touristy". It is famous for its shopping; however, ten years from now, you will never say, "I wish I had seen that jewelry store." For this reason, I suggest spending all of your time at St. John. We took an excursion that allowed us to tour around St. John and return to St. Thomas for two hours of shopping. I wish that I had skipped the shopping! You will have a fabulous time. Enjoy every minute.

Folks, not being picky but the name is St. John. The absolute best place to go is J.J.'s Texas Line Cafe for B'Fast/Lunch or Lime Inn for Lunch and ask for Rich ( and how he got the hook), Caneel Bay IS NOT a secreet!! Stop by Woody's for luch also. If you need shopping, stay home!

Jill-

To answer your question, the last cruise I was on we stopped in St. Thomas. We took a ferry boat over to St. John, it's about 20-30 minutes. We went directly to Trunk Bay. Let me just say that is one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen and I've been to a lot of islands. You can snorkel while you're there or just hang out. Get on the island early. You will have plenty of time before your ship leaves.
