St. Kitts & Nevis or Somewhere Else
Need some advice about St. Kitts/Nevis. Which island would be best to stay on? Would you stay on St. Kitts since it has more to do and take a day trip to Nevis or would the reverse be better? After reading my post, please advise if you would consider a different Caribbean island.
We're looking for a great sandy beach, water that deepens gradually with no rocks upon walking into the water, nice hotel property, and other things to see and do. We're looking for a friendly, safe atmosphere without nudity.
We love clear, beautiful turquoise water like Grand Cayman or Turks and Caicos with snorkeling opportunities. Understand St. Kitts/Nevis are not those kind of islands. Beaches have darker sand and are not coral reef islands.
We've visited the Bahamas, American and British Virgin Islands, Aruba, Barbados, Antigua, Grand Cayman, Turks and Caicos and St. Lucia. Have also been to Bermuda, Cancun, Ixtapa and Hawaii.
We wanted to try something different, but don't want to be disappointed. Overall, our favorites have been Grand Cayman, Barbados, Turks and Caicos and Aruba for the water and snorkeling. Hawaii is best for sightseeing. Enjoyed Barbados very much which has nice beaches and a good assortment of things to see and do.
Any suggestions?

If you are seeking great beaches, bright torquoise waters like those around Grand Cayman, the T&C's and Aruba and lots of very good snorkeling you are going to be disappointed with either St. Kitts or Nevis. The beaches on both those islands are darker, the waters drop of quicker and have a dark blue tint. Snorkeling is below aveare at best on either island. Of the places you visited they are more like St. Lucia both in topography and types of beaches.
That said, they are both attractive islands with rain forests to explore, volcanos to climb, old ruins, fortresses, sugar plantations, Botanical Gardens, petroglyphics and many other things to see and do. It does matter which island you choose just be sure to make a day trip to the other island as they each have something to offer. I'd venture to say if you asked 10 people which island they like best half will say St. Kitts and half will say Nevis.
If you want "something different" try either St. Kitts or Nevis. If you want "more of the same" check out Antigua, Barbuda, some of the Grenadines or revisit one of the islands you've been to before.

If you decide to go to St. Kitts or Nevis, this may help you in making a decision about which island. Consider the airport implications/problems involved in flying into Nevis.
We flew from SJU to Nevis directly. It was wonderful. 10 minutes after landing, we were on our way to the Nisbet. Half an hour and we were sipping rum punches.
The trip back, however, showed us how lucky we had been. We arrived for our 4 p.m. flight from Nevis to SJU. There was a very, very light shower at the time. That's when we discovered that the airport closes when the runways are wet. Apparently, the runways are very short and "large" planes cannot land, except in very good conditions.
At that point, it was too late to catch a ferry to St. Kitts, which has a much larger and longer airstrip. Planes were flying in and out of St. Kitts but not Nevis.
AA sent us to a hotel (Mount Nevis, which we really liked), bought us dinner and breakfast and flew us out at 6 a.m. the next morning.
Next time, I would either fly out early in the day to allow enough time to get to St. Kitts if it was raining or fly into and stay on St. Kitts.
Keep that in mind in making your decision.

I would really consider Anguilla. It's just the most beautiful island we've ever been too. The water is clear blue wonderful and the sand is as white as sugar. The people of the island are very friendly and it's just a wonderful experience. I do not think you would be disappointed.

Hello! I was interested in your post because Nevis is our favorite island. Also because you have been to many of the same places we have. Barbados is our second favorite island, so that also hit home. Here would be my advice. Nevis does not feature the beaches and water that you appear to be looking for. However, it has a Four Seasons hotel that is a casual luxury type of place with wonderful service. The island has some great dining. The culture and environment delighted us. It was fun. It is an ideal place for people looking to relax and indulge themselves in more of the nature adventures. We gained such an appreciation for the locals there. This is the safest place we've ever been. But, you have to decide what your priorities are in your vacation. St. Kitts does give you another island to visit for a day. If you feel strongly though about being somewhere with world-class diving and snorkeling, this is not going to be for you.
We are planning a trip in February to the Grenadines. That sounds like it might share more of the essence you are looking for.
Good luck with whatever you choose. Let us know!

Knowing is correct. Nevis & St. Kitts are volcanic islands. You seem to be looking for coral islands. I can't suggest strongly enough that you add to you criteria of beaches and turqouise water and try Nevis. It can offer you a Caribbean experience you will remember for a long time. Four Season's has a lot of beachfront activity and the off shore snorkling is much better since they installed the breakers. Nisbet propably has the shallowest beach but not a lot of shore protection for fish. Nudity is not allowed on the Island.
