St. Kitts & Nevis Car Rental

Do we need an SUV or high clearance vehicle in St. Kitts, and Nevis or can we get away with just a regular car? Trying to decide what we need to rent.

Thanks!

Anywhere that is on the "tourist" map does not require an SUV.
There are only one or two remote beaches where you'd need one as the access rooads are deeply rutted.
Have fun!

I'd say that you're fine with a regular car and not need anything with 4WD. My visit to St. Kitts was two weeks ago and all of the main roads I traveled on were in excellent repair. Even a few of the secondary roads, while bumpy, were still easily navigable with a low-clearance car. My visit to Nevis was in 2004 and we just used a small car on that trip. Again, no problems.

Are you going to both islands? You might want to look into which rental places will provide you a car on both islands...

Agree with others that 95%+ of the roads on both islands are passable with a regular car. FYI - most rental vehicles on those two islands are small SUV's so don't be surprised if the rental company you choose gives you an SUV to use regardless of what you actually request. TDC has an exchange program between SKB/NEV and I think Avis also does it.

A regular car is more than fine for St.Kitts and the roads are actually very good. If you like driving, you will love the southern peninsula of St. Kitts. Nevis is a bit bumpier but again, you won't be going anywhere that a regular car won't do. Have fun. Delisle Walwyn is a good firm to deal with. Avis was pretty good as well.

Everyone - Thank you so much for the replies. I will change our reservations to a regular car instead.

ejcrowe - We're spending 1 night in Nevis, then 1 night in St. Kitts on our way back home and I think the exchange program works if you do a minimim 3 days.

We're off tomorrow bright and early (YIKES!) for our 1st night in St. Kitts then onto Antigua on Saturday.

Thanks again!

PS: Dear Santa, Don't forget --I want the Sony Vaio TXN19PL. And that Nikon D200 would be nice too! I've been real good this year... LOL.
