Probably about a 10 -15 min. taxi ride to the Caneel Bay and other North Shore beaches.

Stephen: They just had a small rate hike for taxis. I think maybe 20%. It's about $6-7/pp to get from the Westin by taxi to the northshore beaches. I would definitely rent a jeep. It gives you tremendous freedom to explore the island. The Westin has in-house car rental (O'Connor's) and you can park your car right in the resort everyday and night. If you're planning to spend the big bucks at either Caneel or Westin, why not give yourself the freedom to roam around at will at least a few days. You can visit 2-3 beaches a day, do what you want. It's your honeymoon!

Susan...Thanks for the great photos! We are going down to Caneel in Dec. ,and it was good to read your report and the photos put me there a bit earlier! I have just bought a Digital Camera (my first one...I'm finally getting "with it" !) and will try it out at Caneel. Your photos give me inspiration! Cheers!

Hi Susan, Your photos are AMAZING!! I could FEEL that water, sand, air. I love the rainstorm at WSJ pix.
Was there once before and loved it--thanks to you, am now in beautiful-memory land. Can hardly wait for 9 plus months to pass as will return to StJ then, this time for 13 days--7 at WSJ, 5 at villa nr St Francis Bay. Agree with your take on the Westin --beautiful, resort feel, families w/kids (like me).
Thanks again for your trip report and photos.
Where's your next Carib trip gong to be?

Thanks for your contribution, Susan. Your photos were great! You captured your surroundings beautifully. Having been to STJ numerous times, I felt you taking me back. It has been a few years, now....so thanks! By the way....you are very beautiful yourself. Sorry for the rain....summertime can bring that.

SSypniewski: I finally took a look at the pictures. Thank you, thank you! Having another bout of insomnia and viewing your beautiful pictures is so soothing, I think I can go back to sleep now and dream of St. John. It's so great to see my island home from other eyes and to see that you really did have a great time despite the rain. Anyone interested in a trip to St.John/Virgin Islands should take a look at your pictures.

Thanks again for all of the positive feedback regarding my pictures! I am planning on returning to St. John in Oct. next year (this time a week later) because friends of ours are getting married at the Westin next year on Oct. 14th. We'll probably do the split deal again - its nice to spend some time at both resorts - Susan

SSypniewski, do you hae any pictures of what your room looked like at Caneel?

What room was cleaner, the Westin room or Caneel?

In your honest opinion which did you like better?

Hello Stephen!! How r u? I would recommend the Westin definitely! Beautiful pool and close to little downtown in Cruz Bay! Make sure you see Hawksnest beach and try to snorkle the reefs there! Also if you can go over to Leinster Bay toward the East of the island and snorkle the shallow side of the big rock off from the shoreline. You will swim with beautiful sea turtles there.

Stephen_Ross, did you go to the link I provided of my pictures because I did take pictures of both rooms for the westin and and caneel. Caneel's rooms are very basic - the westin rooms are just your typical hotel chain feel - both were clean. However the westin has the tv, phone, etc. while Caneel's does not. Both are fine. I enjoy Caneel's room location over the Westin, but the Westin's room has more amentities. It really all depends on what you are looking for. Honestly you probably won't be in the room that much so either one would be fine (IMO). - Susan

Susan,
My husband and I are heading to Caneel tomorrow for the week for our 1yr anniversary. Thank you for the insight on Scubadu. I have been in touch with them about reserving a day trip. One question- do you happen to know the protocol is if you don't have another couple to join and their minimum is $600 for the trip according to their website? I would hate to miss out on the trip or reserving another trip that doesn't have these requirements.
Also, I have greatly enjoyed your trip posts. We went to Cap Juluca on Anguilla for our Honeymoon last year and decided on St. John this year for a change of scenery. From your posts, I think you two would really enjoy Cap for your next excursion! Keep us all posted on your next adventure!

Hi Lura,
I am sure you are already there on St. John, and yes I am jealous! If another couple does not join in on the scubadu you will have to pay the minimum fee of $600 I believe, I know its pricey put so WELL worth it, IMO. Have a terrific time and tell Joe Ted and Susan from NJ say hello! Please write a trip report when you return. - Susan
