St John in July, is this a good time to go?

I know it is the off-season, but what problems are there in July for St John? Is it hurricane season already? Bugs? Crowds?

Any advice appreciated.

July is a great time to go to St. John. It is definitely hot and humid and great for spending time at the beach. While it is cane season, it is the beginning and the weather is usually very nice. The biggest advantage from my experience is the lack of other tourists. Never a need to wait for a seat in the restaurants, sales in the stores, lower rates in the hotels and resorts, and generally fewer folks where ever you go. Unless you get lots of rain right before you head down, the bugs shouldn't be a big problem.

The only time we've ever encountered stinging jelly fish in the Caribbean( and we've been going for 35 years) was in summer months (except once in Jamaica in the winter). For all I know they're around at any time of year, and we've just been lucky all those other times? Folks who have more experience than I with all 12 mos will guide you better.

We've been to St. John in July before and it is noticeably warmer then than other times of the year. The bugs may be a little worse but if you are dilligent about bug spray at dawn/dusk or in certain areas, you should be fine. It is considered hurricane season but the stormy weather seems to pick up more in August. Summer is low season in the Caribbean so everything Schultz said holds true. As for jellyfish, there's always some around. I swam into a little cloud of tiny ones in January and got a few stings. This past month, I saw a lot of really big ones, the size of dinner plates. There were many but easy to avoid since they're so big you can see them.

I was there July 1 thru 15th this year and it was fine. I'd prev'lly been in December. As Schultz said, differences include positives like fewer crowds and lower prices for villas.
The weather was great--I'd expected it to be hotter and more humid, but breezes kept it comfortable most of the time. Still, the ac felt realllll good.
The only negative diff was there were far more mosquitoes --apparently more than usual for July.
