San Juan -> Vieques: Ferry or Flight?

My husband and I are going to Vieques for 6 nights in late February. We don't plan on spending any time on the "mainland" of Puerto Rico; we just need to get from the airport in San Juan to Vieques.

I've been searching the board for opinions on whether to fly from San Juan to Vieques, or take the ferry from Fajardo. I've found such mixed reviews! Some people say the ferry ride is choppy and all indoors; others say it's great. Some say the flight is quick and easy while others say it's a nightmare. Any advice? Anyone gone there recently? Does the fact that I'm going in late February make any difference?

Thanks for your help!

I went to Vieques last December. Took the ferry from Fajardo over and the plane back (to catch a flight back home). The ferry is very inexpensive, but you have to take an hour cab ride from the airport to Fajardo and then wait in Fajardo because you can't get tickets in advance. The trip wasn't bad, but there wasn't much to see. We spent a few days in San Juan first. Since you're not going to do that, I see no reason not to take the airplane both ways. It's a small plane, but if that doesn't bother you, the flight should be fine.

BTW, we really loved Vieques! The biobay is awesome! If you're going to be there 6 days, you should probably rent a car in advance as there's no public tranport & publicos (taxis) are hard to come by.

Fly! But dont go on air sunshine. I took a flight over from Isla Grande about a $20 cab fare from the bigger airport and about 20 minutes away. M and N was good. I had to miss my flight on the return and take the ferry and it was so freezing inside. It was easy but boring. In fajardo there were big vans that will take you to the airport for about $60 negotiate as you will ride with other people. The Flight is quick and convenient. As far as transpo on the island I had no problem finding Publicos/taxis and they are cheap. I also recommned getting a car and do it in advance because they do sell out. MArtineau bay car rental is the cleanest with new cars. Just got back and loved it so much! Have a great time.

To Slynkky--Boy now you've got me concerned. I just booked Sunshine Air from SJU (Main terminal) to VQS round trip. Curious why you said not to fly them. Have flown Sunshine from Lauderdale to Exuma years ago and they were fine. How was Wyndham. When I booked an Ocean View room I asked about an upgrade under By Request. Guess they are not free but would cost $235 for an Ocean Front. Do you think it is worth the difference in cost. How was the food at Wyndahm? Did you eat elsewhere and what places do you recommend. I plan on getting a car for several days. Don't know if a car for a week a is worth it. Is there a weekly rate or just the $50/day Thanks in advance for the info.

Slynkky--OOPS !! read your trip report further down and got some of my questions answered. Re Sunshine--I have a 5PM from SJU to VQS going over. M&N has a flight that leaves at the same time. Coming back have an 8:30 AM on Sunshine. M&N leaves at 8:15 AM I have to connect with a 10:10 AM flight so the ferry is out and Isla Grande probably is too. Vieques Air Link schedules don't work. Question--Does M&N fly larger planes that aren't as affected by weather ?? Did you have to pay more for the Ocean Front suite ?? Think you answered the restaurant questions.

To Howard: I felt I got ripped off by air sunshine. The day I left the weather was getting bad due to a tropical depression. I had pre paid for a 2:00 flight for 4 people. They could not guarantee the flight would leave. They would not give me a refund either. I had a 4:00 flight from SJU so could not take the chance of not getting to the airport. The manager of the wyndham called as many people explaining my plight and even said he would not recommend them to guests. They would not budge and the locals said I should take the ferry to guarantee I would make my flight. I even went to the airport and talked to Vieques Air Link and M&N and they said they would have refunded me. I ended up having to spend another $70 on the taxi from Fajardo and lost my $250 from air sunshine. Another guest had a confirmed flight from SJU to VQS and it never left. She waited over 5 hours. I just think they have the worst service. I hope you have better luck as you are already confirmed and you cant cancel! What I found out is that all the planes need a mile visibility to fly. It depends when you are going. We had great weather until the last day. As everything else we all have different experiences. I am sure you will be fine. I just wanted to let others know about the poor service from Air Sunshine. As far as the cars I rented from Martineau Bay Cars across the street and it was $55 for a wrangler and $65 for a liberty. No weekly rates. I rented another day from Steve's and it was actually someones personal car! It was junky but everywhere was sold out. Dont pay for an upgrade at the wyndham. They will move you if you are unhappy. Especially if you are a by-request member. They actually do give you the welcome stuff, free local calls, and a paper daily. The food was just ok but they are working on it. It is still new. One bad meal and one great one. It is just way way way too over priced for everything....but its a vacation right? I loved the resort and my trip.
