Not sure you can lump them all together (as is US as safe or safer than BVI)- we felt very safe in STJ but STT was not the same feel. I think you are equally safe in STJ and in the BVI's by just exercising a little basic common sense. Like anywhere else, lock your rental car, don't leave valuables in plain view and have a great time.

Always an interesting topic. I believe it all comes down to common sense. Have there been a few crimes against tourists in the USVI? Yes. Is it dangerous? Not in my opinion.
I live in the suburbs west of Boston. Almost (EVERY) night, there are reports of shootings in the city. Do we avoid Boston? No. But we do use our heads, and at least try and stay clear of possible problem areas at the wrong times.
Most folks seem to feel safe in their own home towns, but most would agree that walking around by yourself at 3am is not too smart....no matter where you are. Bottom line is use your head, and don't live in fear.
Never once felt unsafe on St John.

Generally, crime in the BVI is much lower than crime in the USVI. Crime in St. John is less than in either St. Thomas or St. Croix, and it's a tossup as to whether one or the other is less safe.
However, I'm with the other posters. Crime throughout the Virgin Islands doesn't even begin to approach that in most large US cities, so you can travel to any island and feel reasonably safe. Just don't walk around late at night; take cabs or drive. Many nighttime crimes are perpetrated against people who have become very drunk, so keep alcohol intake to a reasonable level.
Petty crime is a problem throughout most of the Caribbean and is not at all limited to the Virgin Islands, which is why most people recommend that you never leave items in your rental car when going to the beach. If you rent a villa, be sure to lock the doors at night (seems obvious, but you'd be surprised at how many people don't do this). But if you exercise reasonable precautions, you should be fine regardless of where you go in the US or British Virgin Islands.

1 way to know how safe an island is this: would you stay at hotel with no key, & leave door open? (you would have a safe)
at little dix in virgin gorda, thats how safe it is!
would you feel that safe in St John or St Thomas?
