Which islands would you feel safest at not staying at an all inclusive. A place you would rent a car, drive around, go hiking, visit local towns, etc.

Almost all of the islands in the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos and the Caribbean fit that description.

St John, Grand Cayman, Ambergris Caye(Belize) are a few that stood out to me as being very safe to drive around. On Ambergris Caye all you can rent is golf carts.

Grand cayman is very safe compared to many of the other islands.

George nails it!! GC is pretty tops in all catagories..except many the Cayman $..but forewarned is always appropriate and bargins can be found. (foodwise,rental wise and the glorious 7 Mile beach is free!!!

We have rented cars in almost all of the islands we have visited, which is approx 15 plus Mexico and Bahamas. We would rent a car in Jamaica next time. However some islands we have stayed in AI but still we rent a car to get out and about.

Aruba--hands down. I went with GF and 2 of us rented cars for the week to accommodate the group. Drove at night all over and felt perfectly safe. I would not probably do this in many other places. One happy Safe, Island.

I am sure Grand Cayman is also on the list.

We rent a car almost always except DR/Mex. Best islands to drive on that are safe include GC, all the bahamas out islands (eleuthera, exuma, long island etc), BVI (tortola is hilly terrain so safe but diff to drive, Virgin Gorda is much easier and certainly safe), St John is safe but has windy roads. Anguilla and Turks and Caicos are both safe and easy driving.
