Who's spent time at Rum Point on Grand CAyman? Was it before or after the hurricane? What's a great place to eat, and a place to lounge with access to restrooms? What's the best way to get there from Georgetown? How does it differ from 7MB, if you have to choose only one to visit? Would love to hear opinions.

The last time we were on Rum Point was June 2003. It was great-like Gilligan's Island. Only one restuarant/bar as I reacall. Lounge chairs and hammocks all around. A gift shop and public restrooms. Just a cool place to relax. You can ferry over from the Hyatt (I think). We drove. Very easy, pretty drive and you can stop at the blowholes!

Both places are beautiful, so you can't go wrong with either choice.

Rum Point: well away from major part of island. A drive to anything like a coffee shop, sandwich shop, pharmacy, etc. Basic supplies are up there, however. Nice little restuarants. It's quiet, and feels like your own little neighborhood getaway. Many families in Cayman spend a week on that side of the island to "get away from it all". Rum Point has a nice beach, but it's no Seven Mile beach.

Seven Mile beach: serene and amazing. Options for food and activity abound, but you can also be very quiet and lazy and not be bothered if you so choose. There's traffic at times. The beach is soft, white, and stretches for miles. You won't get that in Rum Point. But, you won't get the private neighborhood feel on 7mb either.

Both are doing great and pretty as ever post-Ivan, although you would see a lot of damage on the drive there.

Anne, Loved your site and the photos. Am a long time (1975) North Side gal. Where did you live there? Am sure we have many friends in common.

Hi, we were there at Rum Point in March for a week. The ferry from the Hyatt was not running then with no plans to restart (not enough demand post-Ivan, we were told). The beach bar at Rum Point was good for lunch, but not open for dinner. Beach was small and full of lounge chairs and trees for shade. Food at the Kaibo Beach Club for dinner (1 mile away) was good, picnic benches on the beach and choice of sandwich/burger/or more fancy dishes. Snorkeling was good from Rum Point but quite a swim--bring fins. A few miles down the road at the Queen's monument--great snorkeling, but no rest rooms. With only a short time on island, if you like a variety of restaurants, or without a car, definitely choose 7MB. (we found snorkeling was best on the north side, but do a search for snorkeling and see others' opinions.) For a quiet snorkel holiday, Rum Point is good (stop at the grocery store on the way there). For a good snorkel place on 7MB--Eden Point (a dive shop there and a rest room).

I was at Rum Point a couple of months before the hurricane. It's about a 20 minute drive from Georgetown - look at an island map - the route is pretty easy. A more popular way is by boat from Georgetown.

Rum Point has its own beach bar right there so you'd be all set for lunch and drinks. It has restroom facilities also, as well as picnic tables and there is plenty of shade. There are small boats available for hire, and snorkeling right off the beach and under the pier is pretty good.

It is very different from Seven Mile Beach, and really has its own charm. It is certainly worth a visit, it's relaxing and fun.

I lived on Sand Pointe Rd.... about halfway down on the Left (next to Rankine's old house?) Across from 2 story pink home? It used to be pink w/ a great wrap around porch, but is now enclosed.....not sure what they named it. We loved it ('90-92) and our first daughter was raised up there. Our yellow lab used to run away and hang out at the Rum Pt club and play w/ the tourists all day. It was nice while it lasted. Many treasured memories!

Thanks for the reply. My folks had a place on Queen's Highway (Round House Beyond) and we now own a condo at North Pointe. Good friends with Handel, Lynn, Bo, Patrick, Judson, Roy and Alex l'm glad I don't have to vote on Wednesday!), Clinton, Miss Beryl, Jerry, Gail and Reese, Joy and the late great Emil, Carolyn, and most special Kathy and our greatest friend, the most missed, Otto. I will be on the island for 5 weeks beginning this coming Sunday. Are you in the phone book?
