RIU OCHO RIOS

Has anyone stayed at this resort in Ocho Rios? To my understanding, it opened in October 2005.

Anyone have any reviews? How was the food? service? hotel? any idea on the price?

thanks

tripadvisor.com under Jamaica has probably the most recent reviews -- be forewarned you'll find the usual
diametrically different loved it/hated it responses.
jamaicans.com bulletin boards have also
a current candid lowdown from an old-time Ochie favourer you might check.

I've not been there since AIs aren't my
thing. Ochie itself is a mixed bag, with Royal Plantation arguably the top choice in the area, which is touristic.

We were there Memorial Day week. We stayed in the Deluxe Jacuzzi suite. Room 1461. It was absolutely amazing. What a view!!!! The room was beautiful. I had no complaints with the room service although it was usually late in the day when by the time they got to our room. No Biggie. The food was good. The buffets had plenty to offer. We ate at Sir Richards...good, nothing great. Had to wait an hour to make a reservation. We also ate at the Mammee Bay. It was good as well. If I want exceptional food, I'll go into the city. The staff were very friendly. The drinks were fine. We snorkled right off the beach and it was awesome. We also did Cool Runnings Snorkle and Dunns River falls combo excursion. I would pas on teh Cool Runnings snorkle excursion but would highly recommend Dunns River Falls. It was unbelievable...GREAT!!!
The other offsite excursion we did was the Horse ride at Hooves. Mike and Mikey were great. We did the beach ride and it was very cool riding in the sea.
My only complaint would be that the rooms were not as cool as I would prefer. We usually keep our rooms very cool, at home and on vacation. I'm from Long Island, NY and I enjoy vacationing. I don't mind spending the money if the hotel is worth it. I would DEFINATELY recommend the Riu and look forward to going back soon.

You might also consider RIU Punta Cana Dom Republic which just opened. I read somewhere they are having a grand opening sale $95/per/person/night
