My wife and I are planning a trip to DR in August and would like to know which city is better to visit, Puerto Plata or Punta Cana?. We want to spend about $1400 for an all-inclusive resort for about 4-5 days.

Also, which resorts would you recommend? Thank you in advance.

After 8 trips to the D.R. the most definite thing I'd say is the least favorite area was Puerto Plata..check out reviews on

Punta Cana has great beaches ...certainly has the some of the best beaches of the DR .I've been there many times for a quick and easy 3hours+ flight beach trip ! -but , if you want anything else besides beaches , you probably be better off going to Puerto Plata , it's more of a town and also the nearby areas have more to do and see.Punta Cana has NO real town.Just beach resorts.There're some good resorts though - I liked The Fiestas ,Iberostars ,Rius .Wouldn't mind to go back and stay again at any of those three .The Barcelos also have good reviews .If you go in August , PC is also the least rainy,and a little cooler part of the DR.

I was dissapointed in Puerto Plata, if I ever go back to the DR it will be to Punta Cana.
