Nudity!!!
Have been offered a job in
st Maarten
However I have been reading some message boards and it seems that all the beaches allow nudity??? I am very conservative and would not even consider going topless!! I love the beach but cannot imagine going topless, nude or whatever and even the thought of looking/seeing others in their birthday suits is strange !!! Are there beaches (nice ones) where I will be comfortable. Sorry!! I am a bit of a prude I guess but the world is made of different people

Well, in truth there are only a couple beaches that allow total nudity, but for the sake of your post:

Oh yes! They're running around over there like naked savages! Men, women, grandmas, grandpas, boys, girls, shopkeepers, traffic cops, you name it! All naked all the time. If nudity makes you feel awkward you might want to think about going for a job on a more conservative island, somewhere like the Cayman Islands where it appears someone can't wear a thong without doing hard time.

We have vacationed on St. Maarten many times and have not experienced nudity anywhere except at Orient Beach which is noted for the nudity section of the beach. There are a handful who may be topless, but very few and some family resort beaches require full bathing attire. Enjoy!

Toplessness is common on all beaches on the French side, but how much you encounter will depend on the make-up of the tourists at any particular time. Generally, the more Americans, the less topless. Nudity is common only at Orient, and even there mostly at the south end. You will also find it at the far end of Rouge and sometimes on Plum, but these are not officailly nude beaches. On the Dutch side, nudity is only at Cupecoy. Other beaches may have some topless use, but less than the French side - more Americanized. On any nearly deserted beach it is possible to come across someone nude, but then it is useally avoidable. It is surprising how quickly you stop noticing.

I live in St. Maarten. I never go topless. I go to Orient Beach all the time though and am not uncomfortable with nudity. Most Americans are more uncomfortable than people from other countries
The only beach that is totally nude is Orient and that is primarily on one end. On the other end, most people may be topless but not entirely nude. you will find all stages of dress and undress in betweeen and no one bothers anyone or thinks anything of it
At other beaches, especially on the french side, you may find topless bathers, yes. but you can distnce yourself from them if it makes you uncomfortable. there is plenty of sand for everyone
I suggest that if you do come here, you just relax and enjoy the specialness of livng in a foregn culture and learning about how other people live. you don't have to do what they do, but you don't have to be uncomfortable either. it's just a state of mind
Good luck!

Hi! Not to worry. You don't have to go topless if you don't want to. I go to a beautiful beach on the French side and, yes, there are a few topless ladies, but you're not going to feel uncomfortable AT ALL. I don't sunbathe topless (God forbid I burn!). And I didn't feel weird or left out. Just do your thing! Take that job! You don't have to stay forever. Enjoy it for a little bit and then come back. You'll never ask yourself "what if."
If this garbage is still here in 24 hours, I think it will put to rest the belief that this board is censored and that unpopular comments about islands or resorts are removed by some mysterious "they" who want only happy thoughts.
That said, I still wish someone could remove this garbage that the imbecile dumped above.

xcuse me, after reading the last two posts, I see I should have used the plural form; imbeciles.
im-be-cile (im' bi sil), n. 1. a dull, stupid person. 2. a person lacking the capacity to develop beyond a mental age of seven or eight years. 3. mentally feeble.

Now, to go back to the original post, Mags, it's a shame your legitimate question ended up creating a thread like this.

I've always wanted to put that fake tanning stuff on my butt, but only on one cheek, and then go to a nude beach. When somebody asks me how I only got half a tan I'll say "Gee, I don't know. I must have laid funny."

But to answer your question, there are something like 2 beaches that allow total nudity but some toplessness is seen in most beaches on the French side and almost none on the Dutch. If anyone tells you differently they're lying. Don't forget, there are plenty of topless sunbathers right here in the good old U.S. of A.

I find the idea of topless or nude sunbathing totally obscene and I believe that anyone who goes to St. Martin is a sinner and will be judged harshly by God in the afterlife. Our private parts are called private parts because they're private, and nobody can convince me that Adam and Eve were nude in the garden. They were wearing homemade halter tops, and you know it. The only time somebody should be nude is in the shower and when making love, but only if the lights are off.
