Need some help getting to Eleuthera economicaly (if possible)
Next spring, I will be travelling with my senior parents, and my 4 high school aged kids, renting a house near palmetto point in Eleuthera. The easiest airport to land is probably governor's harbor or possibly rock sound. We travelling from Michigan, so we could leave from detroit,
but airfare is pricey at about $800 each (alot for 7!) Is there a better way? Who flies to those airports directly from a US city? We could even drive south to catch a flight if it was worth it. Any suggestions would be helpful!! Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the only direct flights to Eleuthera originate out of Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Those airports are a long haul from Michigan. The problem is the runway at the airport on Eleuthra is not that long and can only accomodate small planes.

I would suggest flying into Nassau, you can usually get some really great fares from several airlines. JetBlue is flying out of NYC cheap. When you get to Nassau, take the fastferry over which is about $100rtpp. This should save you at least $300pp.
Check the ferry website www.bahamasfastferries.com for more info on sailings.
Have a great time.

I think the cheapest way will be to fly to Miami or Ft. lauderdale and then check out the small charter flights out of Ft. lauderdale. We flew Twin Air 2 years ago and it was fine. You will want to fly into Governors Harbour as it is closer to Palmetto Point. But they only flew out in the morning which meant we had to spend the night in the Miami area. I think the cost of the flight to Eleuthra was $300.00 each, But be warned it is on a 6-8 passenger Cessna.
But that being said the view from the window was excellent, since they only fly about 3000 feet. You will want to rent a car once there. We used someone named Stanley Cooper. Also be prepared that most all of the rental cars there are pretty old and about $50.00 per day.
You will love the water there it is great for snorkeling.
