Your kids would be able to get into all the clubs/nightspots with no problem. The great thing about St. John is it's so safe that they would be fine hanging out with each other. St. Thomas on the other hand I'm not so sure about.

This is in response to Karen's post. Why do you have to be so negative with your response? It is well known that there is some crime on St Thomas/St Croix and little if none on St John. Do you need to advise folks to stay away because of the crime? Is there really any need for that? You see, if you were well meaning and not simply blabbering away you would also mention that the criminal activity is largely confined among the locals and seldom ever involves visitors and that it is perfectly safe for a visitor to go about his/her way on St Thomas and St Croix (exercising the common sense he/she would at home) and have a perfectly fine vacation. Stay away from the islands if that's what you feel YOU need to do, but please, let other people make up their own darn minds!

Looks like St. Thomas or St. John is the destination for us. Everyone is split on which is better-I guess it depends on the individual. Thanks for your input.

SOUNDS LIKE KAREN AND JOHN ARE ONE AND THE SAME. NO MORE SHADEY LOCALS HANGIN' IN RED HOOK THAN IN CRUZ BAY OR CORAL BAY. MORE DRUGS AND LOCALS AT DUFFYS ON ONE ISLAND COMPARED TO THE OTHER? YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING. HOW ABOUT FRED'S OR WOODY'S? DRUGS CAN BE FOUND ANYWHERE EVEN IN SCHOOL AT HOME IF ONE IS LOOKING BUT YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE ONE OF THE CRIME STATISTICS IF YOU ARE LOOKING.

Lou- I guess you live in the Virgin Islands? If you think in any way that Red Hook is similar to Cruz Bay you've definitly lost it. I lived near Red Hook and also in St. John. Red Hook has crackheads hanging outside half the bars at night. Duffys-yep, Poormans-yep, East End-yep, Saloon-yep. Woodys-no crackheads outside except maybe Lindy Duffys, nope and Beach Bar-nope. Lou my bro just a bit off on this one. Peace

33 murders and 50 rapes this year in the Virgin Islands. ALL of those either in St. Thomas or St. Croix. NOT ONE in St. John.

Ellen, don't let anyone tell you they are all the same - the crime statistics speak for themselves.

Thanks again. Given the crime rate and availability of drugs, if that's our destination, I think we'll have to stick close to the hotel.

No doubt that St. John is a tropical paradise but teens plus will find it snoozy. I really think the Marriott Frenchmans Reef has enough movement to satisfy them and you can get picked up right from their dock to do diving, snorkelling, etc. Also you will get a deal, as the other poster said. I don't think you have to worry about any danger! It is really tough to find places that teens-young adults are not bored stiff at night. St. Thomas is bustling and our kids like that and they have been raised to know how to behave. The beaches are much better on St. John and BVI. What about Bitter End Yacht Club, lots of action, families, sailing lessons, and everyone agrees the BVI is superior to the USVI.

True, theres plenty of crime on St John, but its mainly petty crime and not the violent crime of St Thomas/St Croix. We had our belongings stolen from the beach on St John, but never felt threatened. Our teenage children were never bored on St John, but they aren't spoiled, we've raised them to appreciate nature, so they loved every minute.
