MoBay to Negril

How is the drive from MoBay to Negril? (conditions of roads, time, comfort factor) We are trying to decide if we should take the Couples shuttle or the flight? Any advice is very much appreciated. By the way, we are only going for 4 days..thought that might be a factor. Thanks in advance!

The drive from Mo Bay to Negril is only about 50 miles but takes about 1 1/2 hours. In February of 2002 it was still under construction. It is a nice scenic drive but since you are only there for 4 days I'd fly. The flight takes about 20 minutes. Couples is almost across the road from the Negril airport. You will love Negril - the beaches are wonderful.

Take the shuttle if you want to see the
real Jamaica. You'll learn alot about the city if you have the right tour guide. Driving is on the left. it is also fast, but again, our tour guide was great and pointed out alot of interesting sites.

Hi Isabella,
I just returned from Jamaica yesterday. I stayed in Negril as well.
I would suggest you save the cash and ride. The road is now complete, and the ride was rather nice. You really do get to see the real Jamaica. Anyway, I will be writing my review to post today, perhaps you will want to take a look-see.

Enjoy
Goldie

Would also recommend land route -- it took closer to 3 hours last feb.
We have taken a two week vacation in Negril in both 01 and o2 and put together a first timers advice document that we will e-mail on request.
Dan and Ginny

Go by land, but see more of the island off the shuttle by hiring a private car/driver. Rather than the coastal road, turn left at Reading and take the over-the-mountains road, thru dairy, citrus and sugarcane country to Ferris Cross then Savannah La Mar/Sav on the South Coast. The distance is about the same;the road is often not the best. But you just might want to come back and explore... Carolyn Barrett at [email protected] is a good choice.

Goldie: The entire coast road from Mo Bay to Negril is complete?? I'm surprised to hear that. In December, it was no where near complete, with any Jamaican who spoke of it saying they did not expect completion for several years.

Isabella: My vote is still to fly...especially with only 4 days.

I also vote on the flight if you only have 4 day time is valuable.

If you only have 4 days, definitely fly. You don't want to waste time on the drive, especially if you get others in the van that want to stop for more Red Stripe.

Just got back from Negril/Montego Bay yesterday and the road is completely paved. Remnants of work are piled along the shoulders, but didn't hinder the ride at all. It took about 1.5 hours, and really wasn't too bad. I'd save the cash and ride.
