Miss Lucy's Full Moon Party

Will be in St. John in June. I would like to know if the "Full Moon Party" at Miss Lucy's is worth staying an extra night for.

Well, we love the Full Moon Party at Miss Lucy's when they have a more limited but unique Caribbean style menu which often features specials like roasted whole pig and a "fish fry." There's sometimes a featured cocktail as well. Live music is also part of the fun. IMO, it's always worth it to stay an extra night on STJ, but if that is the only reason you would be staying, you may be disappointed because the Full Moon Party is not rowdy, simply a wonderful experience in an uniquely beautiful spot.

I can only comment for our family...we went to the full moon party(it was the same night as the coral bay music fest and we had to choose) big mistake. we were about the only ones there. the roast pig was just a portion of a roast pig, rice was uncle ben's variation, the staff was very condescending(and we are very down to earth, none of the entitled american vacationer thing going on).
so stay an extra night in stj, because it is a wonderful place, but hang out at island blues or any of the other wonderful places, we just found miss lucy's disappointing and overrated. but most love this place.

full moon on tortola is VERY VERY overrated.

I stay monthly st john and travel to Tortola and other islands as well....

Bomba's full moon is a alcohol-mushroom tea-infested jungle. A zoo.

Miss Lucy's is a great family party and i would stay the xtra night---hidden agenda with soggydollar who posts so be careful.

Tuxedocat says it all clearly and accurately...but has an agenda as well as a villa owner who rents out coral bay property---but accurate with miss lucy's.

robert59 has to be a near legal drinker.

I disagree; the Bomba shack is a non-touristry, natural adventure that has soul which springs up from Tortola's past. Yes, it looks like the "Little Rascals" clubhouse, but that's the point of it. The creator, named Bomba, started it over 30 years ago. He met there with the local Tortolians, and things just developed from that point on. It took on its own steam until today. It's now a top place to party in the Caribbean, according to Caribbean Magazine, and my own personal experience. During the day, it's great for families and the lunch and dinner buffets are to die for. You may want to vacate the place after dark and on when there's a full moon out and the "Full Moon Party" begins; that's when they serve the Full Moon Party Mushroom tea. Personally, I'll take the Bomba Punch; I drank two and did the duck walk out of the place. Thought I'd taken a dozen stomach relaxers. Of course, Bomba brags that the Bomba Punch is why they don't need Viagra on Tortola. Personally, if you want a non-touristry place that has island soul, hit Tortola's Bomba Shack; you'll know you're someplace different. Robert59

Christiegr; Tortola's Bomba Shack has been on the food channel, too. It's got soul!!! I ate grouper with pidgeon peas & rice (Bahamian style) and it was delicious. Will never get a grouper like that in the U.S. It was swimming in the ocean that morning. Robert59

I had no idea they served food there! We stopped by for a beer in the middle of the afternoon...so it was pretty empty anyway, but thinking back, cannot imagine where they would be hiding a kitchen in there!!!

soggydollar: Marbleheadguy attacks and criticizes other posters for no apparent reason. You've posted some very good information for a while now and I think other posters will agree with me. No one else would claim you have any "agenda." I don't agree with you about Miss Lucy's but, hey, every person and every place can have an off day or days. You offer an honest alternate experience and IMO that's what a travel forum is all about. As for me, I don't rent out my property and I wouldn't mention it on this or any other such forum if I did. I enjoy sharing my experience and enthusiasm for St. John with anyone who'd like such information. I don't think anyone has to agree with my advice or perspective and I think I almost always preface my opinions with "IMO." I don't mind if people don't see things in the same way I do, but I do find it offensive and downright misleading when someone asserts a patent falsehood. Anyone else agree with me on that one?

thanks tux...
i agree with you. experiences, expectations, and circumstances, it does not matter what part of life this applies to, but EVERYONE is going to have a different opinion, based on their experience and expectations. thank goodness we are not all the same!!

I do know from your posts that you have a home on STJ, but never, ever mentioned renting!!

And as far as Miss Lucy's goes...more than likely, we just hit it on a bad night. I had heard such wonderful things about the place and was looking forward to the brunch, then realized we would be there during full moon...oh well.

soggydollar and others; Yep, they serve food there...very informally. We had grouper from a BBQ grill. They also have great ribs and chicken. The tea is reported to be hallucinogenic, but I only sipped once from my wife's mug. She didn't like the taste that much, so we gave it to someone next to us. Later on, I saw him climb a palm tree. It is a beach bar, with a history of surfer patrons. The Full Moon Party has steel bands, reggae and fungi music and dancing, people lying on the beach and whoofing down Bomba's drinks. I stayed at Sebastion's by the Sea, which is about a hundred feet down the road; that's how I got to know the place well. I ran into by accident. It's constructed of plywood, driftwood, aluminum, and any other material that will fill up a wall hole. I walked inside out of curiosity, thinking it was an old abandoned shack. The inside decor was "Early Good Will" with old chairs, license plates and autographed panties hanging from the ceiling. I noticed a bar and freezer. I was on my way out, when a voice said, "What ya need, mon?". Someone was sleeping in a corner..the bartender. I said a Beck's beer, and he replied, "OK, mon, you stay at Sebastian's. Take one and pay me back when you come back." I walked onto the road, sipping the beer, thinking I just left the Twilight Zone, with Rod Serling whispering his soft-spoken narration. The big time is once a month during the Full Moon. Bomba brews the Midnight Tea in a large metal pot across the road. Whenever Tortola has a good rain, a special type of mushroom pops up all over the island. In fact, it's even sold in grocery stores. Yes, it is a fungi and it is psychedelic and LEGAL to brew and drink on Tortola. The day after Bomba's Full Moon Parties, about half the island doesn't show up for work the next morning. HINT: Rain on Tortola a few days before a full moon = bumper crop of these mushrooms = Bomba harvesting them by hand (he likes the ones that grow on cowpods because they're more potent) = one helluva Full Moon Party at Bomba Shack = mucho tea swilled down = noyone shows up at work next day. It is an experience. Robert59

Thanks for that contribution Robert! I had known of the place and the legend for many years before, literally, stumbling onto it on our way from Apple Bay to Sebastian's. Although the timing has never worked out to "participate" in a full moon event, it remains high on my list of things to do before this decade is over!

thanks Robert, I just love those kind of tales...things that just sort of happen while you are on vacation.
We always end up in some kind of fun like that...One Love at JVD, the young artist from Coral Bay
