Leaving in 3 days for Grand Cayman, last minute questions

Thank you all you wonderful folks who have provided us with the involuable information to plan our first trip to GC.We're so excited! We'll be staying at the Beachcomber condos for 10 days. I promise a great trip report that hopefully will be helpful to future travelers.

Is it a better experience to drive to Rum Point or to take the ferry? On this Mastic Trail is it something you walk through or drive through? Would you recommend it as a valuable experience and why? I think if I came face to face with a boa constrictor I'd have a heart attack!

Restaurants: Which is better for lobster--the Lobster Pot or Decker's? Is Decker's really all you can eat lobster? Best of the high end restaurants: Reef Grill, Smugglers Cove, Calypso Grill, The Grand Old House and the Lighthouse. For less expensive meals: Eats, the Edge, the Champion House and Chicken Chicken. Have I missed anything? Is there a certain night that most restaurant are closed?

Happy Hours: Coconut Joe's and the Cracked Conch on Friday nights. My Bar and Fidel Murphy's--don't know what nights. If we're not staying at the Treasure Island Hotel are we allowed to attend their happy hours by the pool?

Night Clubs: Next Level is good only on Wed. nights. The Royal Palms has music on Thurs. Fri. and Sat. nights. The Matrix--not sure where it is and what the deal is.
Are there cover charges at most places? Is it true that most clubs are closed on Sunday nights?

Weather: I keep checking and it seems that it rains every day there. Is there a certain time of day is usually rains and for about how long does it rain?

Are all shops is Georgetown closed on Sundays? You can't buy alcohol on Sunday's?
Where do most locals hang out on Saturdy's and Sunday's during the day?

Guess that's about it. Any and all comments or advise is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! (I'll post on Caribbeanonline.com too)

Hi there,

A few comments...

Haven't been to Decker's, but definitely didn't like the Lobster Pot.

With regard to the high end restaurants, I didn't see Pappagallo on your list. It's a definite "don't miss." Smugglers Cove is our favorite, but Pappagallo runs a close second.

Have a wonderful time! Looking forward to your trip report!

Think Reef Grill is the top restaurant on Cayman. For less expensive, go to Eats and Champion House. I was absolutely unimpressed with Chicken Chicken (just my opinion). ALL clubs are closed on Sunday. You walk the Mastic Trail. Yes, shops in town are closed on Sunday. And people are where you find them.

My husband and I were just there in April, I would suggest driving to Rum Point. You get to see alot of the other side of the island and along the way there are some nice secluded spots to snorkel. Rum Point is very relaxing, be careful of the baby stingrays - my husband almost stepped on one. They have a little shack with food and drinks, very good food and worth the money I thought compared to the other islands that I have been to.

I would suggest Decker's for the all you can eat lobster. The Wharf is a very nice restaurant also, the food was good and the service was excellent.

All the shops are closed on Sundays and close at 5pm during the week. Pretty much everything except restaurants are closed on Sunday.

Yes, Deckers offers the all you can eat lobster. My husband ate two, said they were good, but he complained all week long that he still had the aftertaste. There is a large list of great high end restaurants. Our favorite was Casanova's. Eats has a complete menu and we ate breakfast six out of seven days there.
The Matrix is in the Islander complex and is closed on Sunday nights. They have a dress code, if you're planning a visit. Check the section in those guides for discount admission to The Next Level. The bars close at 3am M-F and 12 midnight on Sat and Sun. Your best bet is to call and check on the different nightclubs once you are there.
Some of the stores are open on Sunday from 10am to 6pm. The liquor stores are closed on Sundays and most close by 7pm the other nights.
FYI:The Stingray brewery offers samples and has a free admission, but they're closed on Sundays.

I was in the GC recently, Had dinner at Calypso Grill, The Grand Old House, The Wharf, and The Lighthouse. Lighthouse is by far and away the best restaurant i've been to in a very long time. Amazing food, amazing service and it is very romantic. I would put the restaurants in this order. 1-Lighthouse, 2-Calypso Grill, 3-Grand Old House, 4-The Wharf. I also went to the Lobster Pot for lunch, wasn't too impressed.

just returned last night from GC. the most fabulous water and beach we've seen anywhere. As for Rum Point, personally, none of us were impressed (me, husband, 2 kids 14 & 7). Reminded us of a Jimmy Buffet hangout. a bit too "orchestrated" for our taste. was really crowded that day (thursday). Only place we thought the water was dirty. Compared to 7 Mile, not even close! however, the drive there (up to 1 hour) might have been nice to see the more quiet places on the island.

Lobster Pot not worth the cost. Pictures are deceiving. $180 US for the 4 of us. Portions smaller than other restaurants and not as good. Eduordo's is FABULOUS! Not on the water but the food and service were excellent. For a true island experience,we suggest the Crow's Nest. The ambiance is wonderful! The owner a gem. The food very good and reasonable. A carribean experience to say the least!

we also ate at Eats for breakfast (stayed at the Westin and it was directly across the street). doesn't look like much from the outside but huge portions and very good food. Breakfast combo's run around $6.

Coconut Joe's was ok. Decent for a reasonable price. SKIP Fidel Murphy's for dinner. Don't know about happy hour, but we were not at all impressed with the food.

We were in GC for 7 days last week. Rained once for a very brief period. Often times the clouds seemed to hang around the Georgetown area, but at our spot at the WEstin (middle of 7 Mile) it always seemed sunny. A more fantastic beach you won't find. Truly amazing. Much better than Jamaica, Maui or Cancun.

Don't know if you have kids, but if you do, don't miss the Jolly Roger pirate ship cruise in the afternoon. 2 hours of complete fun and a great swimming stop in front of the Wharf 1/2 way thru. Everyone jumped off the boat into the water and swam, snorkeled, etc. The "pirates" threw several kids off the plank. Anyone is allowed to jump off several parts of the ship (even the top of the bow -- one heck of a jump!!). It was fun for adults and kids alike.

Have a great time!! We'll be returning as soon as we recoup some of the $$ we spent!!!
