My wife and I stayed at Gallows Point a couple of years ago for several nights. The fact that there is no beach is a mute point. All the beaches of St. John are located on the north shore and you need to drive to them regardless. The Caneel has access to several nice beaches....the Westin's is manmade. Gallows Point is wonderful! Excellent accommodations at an unbeatable location....walking distance to Cruz Bay. There is a restaurant on site....ZoZo's. Great reviews on it....but we never made it there. The unique thing about the units there are the wall size doors/windows that you can throw open and lock for all day/evening breezes. Most of the units are right on the water and are slightly different in furnishings as they are individually owned. We had 10C....highly recommend it! The pool area is nice, as well.

Gallows is wonderful. I have stayed there twice. The views are beautiful and the people are very nice. No bar other than the restaurant, but you are definately in walking distance to Cruz bay...there's that bar right there on the beach when you walk down into town on your right that is really relaxing. There is also alittle store there at Gallows that has snacks, videos for rent, and equipment for snorkeling and other activities. They will set up excursions for you, but you can also try "Connections St.John" if you're looking for other things that they cannot book. the website is http://connectionsstjohn.com/
We are going back in August and will be renting a home (only because there are 4 of us), but we will miss being able to walk into town to grab a bite or just staying in and cooking for ourselves (the kitchens have everything you need except the food- we actually bring a cooler down because buying food at their markets can get expensive). We stayed in 7D which is an oceanview upper and it was great! There is a grill right across from it, which was very convenient. Bonus: ZoZo's is delicious if you have never been there!

I'm going to be staying at the Gallows Point Resort as well for our honeymoon. I researched it a lot and have heard nothing but wonderful reviews. I really loved the fact that it was more of an apartment than a hotel room and that you'd be overlooking the ocean or harbor. We'll be staying in an upper ocean room, I cant wait!
