Jamaica Inn or Royal Plantation?

My husband and I are in our early 30's and looking for a relaxing vacation. We are attempting to decide between RP and JI or maybe spending five days at each. Our idea of vacationing is laying on a beach, sipping drinks, reading, and having a lingering dinner. We don't need activities, crowds, our rebel rousers! Anyone have thoughts on either resort?

Thanks,
Susan

Jamaica Inn sounds just right for you ! Especially if you like "lingering dinners". Not only are they lingering but the outdoor setting is about as romantic as it gets !

The rooms are lovely, the staff is truly caring, and there is an aura of old world elegance that is hard to find these days, on any island.

I was lucky enough to spend 2 weeks at JI in the Spring of 04...and there were many couples your age, and some of my generation ;-)...but that is part of the charm.

I'm not familiar with the other property, but I will always sing the praises of Jamaica Inn.

Marion

Bumping this thread up to see if there are any other opinions - having a hard time deciding between these two properties. Any other advice?

Listen to MarionCK!! I can't comment on Royal Plantation, but I can tell you that JI is wonderful. We were there last fall for the first time. Everything you have asked for is at JI and more. I just read your requirements to my husband, and he said without a doubt you want the JI. It is a repeat for us. The music with dinner, the setting--everything. Click on my name to read my trip report.

Good luck in your decision. Owa

Hello: We have stayed at Jamaica Inn a few times, first time almost 20 years ago and 4 years ago and going again. It is very special, the old world charm with updated suites and rooms. You have outdoor living rooms with upholstered furniture, a plantation feel. We love the cheaper top floor balcony, main wing as it has the best view. But, if you can afford it, opt for the White Suite, wow, private pool, private grounds, magnificent water views. This is a family owned hotel for many years, it is run by two brothers which makes all the difference, they do not allow anyone on the property unless you are staying there or on the beach. Actually, it is a beautiful beach, could not find better. Plus no kids allowed under 10/12 so quiet. I know you will fall in love with it if you like it quiet and good service and friendly. You can use their drivers to take you around or on tours.
Enjoy. Joanie

We stayed at Jamaica Inn a couple of years ago and really liked it. Accomodations and food were wonderful. Beach is not overly large but more than adequate. Another Vote for JI

We stayed at Royal Plantation last October. The place is very cheesy. I should have known though – RP is own by the company which run Sandals and Beaches. That should explain it all.

Hi Susan,

My husband and I are planning the same type of trip in February. We are also in our early 30's and looking to just get away and relax. We are considering the Royal Plantation. Did you end up staying there? We have never been to Jamaica, so we could use some insight.

Thanks,
Jonette

Jamaica Inn fits the bill. Royal Plantation is okay but for the $$$$ I would choose Jamaica Inn. It fits everything you are looking for and they will treat you right.

We were right next door to both on our last trip to Ocho Rios. RP looked very nice, but its location cannot be beat by JI - it is situated on a point of the bay, so it has an innate sense of privacy. We saw both from the water. RP did not have as nice a beach area - and we saw the open air living rooms of hte JI right over the water. JI is next on my list of places to stay! I have also heard that the food is excellent, and that matters to me!!

JI definately . .. it is glorious . . no TV's or telephones in the rooms . . so 100% Rest and relaxation! They have just refurbished the rooms too . .. this one gets my vote everytime.

Another vote for JI

Then again 5 days at each might work

We divided our time between Idle Awhile in Negril and JI - different resorts.
