Jamaica Advice Please....
My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Jamaica. We don't really like to drink very much, but do sometimes like to smoke a joint. Would anyone have any advice for the non-boozing vacationer to Jamaica. How is the weed there, how expensive, easy to find, etc...

Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah,

Shame on you! Don't you know that booze is the only brain numbing substance allowed on one's vacation. Just kidding. The weed is excellent. Just don't take what you are offered right away - expecially if it looks low quality. They typically offer lower grade stuff first, and will only break out the good stuff if you sound like you know what you are talking about. You can buy enough for the whole week for about $50 US... Also great hash down there. Be discrete, but don't worry - many of the Jamaican (men) smoke quite openly. It is not legal there, but is pretty much ingnored. You will probably be asked if you want to buy some week about a hundred times a day. Find one person you trust, and stick with them.

Keep in mind, we aren't talking the bright green sensei that we are used to. The weed tends to be a darker color (due to the humidity) but is very sticky and strong. You can also tour the weed fields if you want. I never had, as it sounds a little dangerous.

Have a great trip,
Robert

Don't bother buying at the airport - low quality and high price. Wait until you get to your resort. All the bartenders, grounds staff, water sports crews, etc. will be glad to sell it to you. This way you don't have to worry about buying from some peddlar. We buy from AI hotel staff whenever we go down. They are always glad to help out.

Barb

Glad to see that not all the readers of this site are the typical boozing vacationers. I'm often surprised at the general acceptance of heavy drinking in the Caribbean. It seems be a standard part of the experience. I find smoking pot to be a far less toxic experience. Perhaps the Rastafarians are on to something - not only do they smoke weed, but they also denounce alchohal, tabacco, and red meat. Very interesting religion. Jamaica has a unique culture, and the music and attitudes toward weed have a worldwide impact...

Interested in others experiences (bad and good) with pot in the Caribbean...

We went to Negril in 1994, I remember on the taxi ride from MoBay to Negril children would run down the hills toward the taxi waving what looked like BRANCHES of ganja at us. It still brings a smile to my face to remember that. If you are going to Negril, it will be everywhere and most of it will be KIND. Just like the parking lot scenes at a Grateful Dead show. Enjoy it while you are there, but don't be dumb enough to try to take any back with you.

NO NO NO NO!!!! Do NOT, I repeat, Do NOT purchase ganja from the roadside branch wavers!!!! It will ridiculously expensive..they prey on first timers who don't know better (although Jill, it makes me smile too!!)

Make nice with your driver if you are going a long distance...offer to buy a soda for him, etc...if you show respect, often they will realize you're the real deal and assist you with a score. And remember...bargain, bargain, bargain...you should be able to find a good size amount (like it'll last you all week) for $30 US no problem. Bargain, but again, be respectful--this is a living y'know? And Robert's right...make like you know what's up, even if you don't. When I am offered kind for $80...I laugh and say "mi friend, dis isn't mi first trip ta Negril!"...the price drops significantly!

And yes, be discreet. JA police don't generally hassle tourists about weed if you are smart about it. Toke on your porch, your yard...on the beach if you are able to still keep an eye out. It IS illegal and there IS a chance you can get busted...but it isn't likely.

Try to have someone else you trust (a driver, hotel worker, etc) help you find someone THEY trust..it's just easier. Buy cakes and shrooms and stuff from someone with an ESTABLISHED vending area (bakery, Tedd's One Stop in Negril, etc)...buy from someone walking up the beach and you're likely to spend a bunch for no buzz.

Now...go have a good time...and bring papers with you..it's just easier

happy 4/20 to all, and to all a good LIGHT!!!

Right on Mia... That has been my experience as well. Avoid the roaming "jugglers"... You will get a much better deal from hotel staff, and dealers with an established location. They want your return business, and that of your friends. They may try to sell you dirt weed at first, but be persistant... they will gradually break out with the kind buds. You can buy a pipe anywhere in Jamaica for $5, but bring your own screens (or papers).

You are very unlikely to be hassled for weed in Jamaica, but still, be careful. As long as you are discreet, and keep an eye open, you will have a great time.

Eric

Don't waste your time on the hash. I have been ripped off on hash a couple of times while on Jamaica. Good advice on sticking to the resort staff for your buds. Anyone will be glad to help you. Don't waste your money buying it by the joint. You will get a much better deal buying a small bag. Beware that it will mold quickly if you don't keep it in a baggie (as will the mushrooms).

Robert

wow- this is cool! A thread without trolls and SHAME ON YOU POTHEADS! I outgrew the weed many years ago- but I fondly remember my brother's many trips to negril where he made friends in the hills. He did make a short trip to jail for trying to wear"hash soles" in his shoes. The dogs nabbed him.

LOL! why would you want to bring from the states when you can get the good stuff there?

normally it might have been easier to take the stuff going (vs. bringing back), but these days w/ heightened security at US airports i wouldn't suggest it. there are lots of bomb-sniffing dogs around & it's really hard to hide the stuff from them. last time i came back from jamaica they had the dogs right outside the plane door, and they jumped all over my handbag which must've had some residual smell left over from having ganja in it while on the island!

don't know about the rest of the caribbean, except that it was hard to score in the dominican republic - but there was lots of cocaine (!) weird.
