Is this true about Eleuthera?

On another message board, Doug from Cartwright's cottages posted a message that a company named Promolont was planning to build, and build BIG, on my favorite out-island. Their website (which is brand new) lists plans for 1500 condos, 1500 townhouses, casino, golf courses, marinas, polo fields, even schools and hospitals! Here's the URL:

http://www.promolont.com/locations_feature.html

This seems unbelievable to me. Sleepy Eleuthera turning into a gambling mecca? Does anyone have any more info on this? (Doug will not reply to my questions on bahamas-mon.com) Please say it ain't so!

I hope not. The out islands becoming a big Disney theme park? Please say it ain't so!! I would get in touch with the Bahamas National Trust. They have a website, and fight for preserving the wildnerness heritage of the Bahamas. Robert

Robert, I've been checking this out on a few other message boards, and concensus seems to be that it's too far-fetched to be real. Some think it's a hoax...but there was a mention of "some houses" going up in Jack's Bay, south end of Eleuthera. Not to worry! One islander wrote that he would welcome this sort of development, as it would definitely strengthen the depressed economy there, and bring back more homesick transplanted residents. I guess I can see his point...one man's trash is another man's treasure! But I love it just the way it is.

Doug, actually I DID direct my reply to you on the other message board. You still have not responded there. I see no reason to correspond with you privately, and for obvious reasons I won't be posting my private email on this board.

Are you actually on Eleuthera? If so, can you tell me whether the development at Jack's Bay is a Promolont venture or is their venture still only in the "website" stage? I did read the website carefully, but there are no dates, locations, or other specifics.

I do think there's some credance to this. I believe the development is called Emerald Bay, it wil be very high end condos and villa's, think $1 million plus vacation homes. I've actually received some promotional brochures on this development. It looks to be residential, not a hotel. Also a huge golf course.

It will NOT be a gambling mecca, or Disneyesque. I think it appears to be something like Casa de Campo, but even more exclusive.

Emerald Bay is being built in Exuma,it is a 4 Seasons Hotel development that will include a casino and is slated to open mid 2003.Incidentally,the Eleuthera development has received no publicity or promotion in the Nassau newsmedia yet which is very strange if it is going to as big as it forecasts; 3 renovated hotels, more than one golf course, polo fields, casino and private housing estates etc. etc.
