Is Caneel worth it?
The prices seem really high - is the hotel really that great? I am taking the bar exam in july and want to go to St. John right after - debating between spending the money at Caneel or renting a villa. I need something with no stress. Also, does anyone know if you can rent a villa for less than a week?

It's impossible to say whether or not Caneel would be "worth it" for you. It depends on many factors. Caneel is beautiful, the grounds and the beaches are superb. It is expensive but in July you will be able to get a lower rate since it's off season.
You can most definitely rent a villa for less than a week, I've done it myself. If being on the beach is vital to you, just be aware that there are only a few beachfront villas on St John and they are expensive. It's also less likely that they would be available for less than a week.
If you just want to take a few days and veg on the beach, I would opt for Caneel. Beautiful old style Caribbean resort, lovely rooms, gorgeous grounds and beaches. Excellent, low key service and NO STRESS.
You can take a cab into Cruz Bay some evenings to eat at some of the great restaurants and maybe bar hop a bit.
Hope this helps. Have fun!

I have just returned from Caneel. It is most definitely worth it! There is a large variety of prices, primarily corresponding to room location. Seven gorgeous white sand lined beaches with warm, clear multi-hued blue water, that is shared by just a few other guests offers serenity and privacy. The extensive grounds are landscaped with palm trees and a large variety of flowers. Staff is friendly and helpful (You can even have your favorite tropical drink brought to you as you float on your pursonal raft). The food is excellent. A most relxing stress free vacation amidst picture-perfect surroundings.
