Honeymoon in Grenada in May 2002

Has anyone been in Grenada? It is hard to find much info on this seemingly remote and mysterious island. Interested in diving, snorkeling, some nightlife and market type shopping and breathtaking scenery. Thanks Mates.

Congrats on your upcoming marriage! Grenada is a wonderful destination for a honeymoon. My husband and I have visited 3x, and it never fails to delight and amaze. There is an endless variety of nature, from lush green mountains and rain forests, to waterfalls and crater lakes, to golden and black sand beaches. The bounty of the land and sea makes for interesting and varied local cuisine. The town of St. George is one of the most attractive in the Caribbean, and has a lively market. Tourism is (thank goodness!) slow in taking root, and the government has ensured that it will not be overly commercial large-scale stuff -- no hotel may be taller than a palm tree.

There is a wide range of accomodations, with the largest concentration being in the Grand Anse beach area (the beach is a 2 mile swath of creamy sand and turquoise clear water); its a lively area if you are interested in nightlife. There are lots of unique and quirky properties in other remote areas as well.

For more information, you can visit www.grenadaexplorer.com. Also, I have a report, with photos, of my last trip on my personal website at www.homestead.com/islandtime/MainPage1.html. Or feel free to drop me a note.

Yes, Jigger, our family loved Grenada. It has the best Saturday morning market I've ever seen on the islands. Wonderful vegetables, handmade crafts, lots of fun. As for scenery, we were there with our kids and made a quest out of seeing the 7 waterfalls we had read about. I think we made it to 4 or 5! We all loved jumping under the falls. We don't dive, but the snorkelling was not great. However, we stayed on Grande Anse beach, which is very busy, so snorkeling would probably be better on a day-trip. The people were great, and (suprise) very appreciative of Americans, unusual for the Caribbean, in my experience. Go!

Hey Jigger,
I had the fortune of visiting Grenada in November of 2001 and the Island is beautiful.

I stayed at La Source, which is one of the few all inclusives in Grenada, but do not expect a typical resort here. It was fantastic, top of the line with spa treatments and a long list of actvities to choose from including archery, tai chi, yoga and scuba diving all included.
The staff is the hotel's best assest and they reflect the people of Grenad on the whole.

Outside of the resort, I liked the capital of St.Georges', even with the hills. I think the city is very charming. The island is very hilly and driving on your own might be risky. Do an island tour and visit Carriocou. You can also do the excursion to the Grenadines.

There isn't much nightlife in Grenda, but there are a few clubs to be found.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

http://www.grenadaexplorer.com

http://www.lasourcegrenada.com

http://www.summercrew2000.com

My partner and I spent three weeks on Grenada over the Y2K Xmas & New Years. Very very friendly people. We thought we would stay at the Flamboyant Hotel, but two days and nights of cruise ship tourists convinced us to move. We moved up the hill to a very charming apt/hotel with an incredible view of the Morne Rouge, and I can't for the life of me remember the name! But I think when we go back, we'll stay at "12 Degrees North". Very clean (each maid is assigned only 2 rooms)small, quiet, intimate. The owner took us on a tour of the property and several rooms. It is wonderful and they really spoil you.
To me it would be a shame to fly to paradise and stay at some 100+room resort hotel.
We rented a jeep, standard trans and I got to learn how to drive on the wrong side of the street, on the wrong side of the vehicle, and shift with my left hand. What a kick! And I injured no one, not even a roaming cow.
oh dear, sorry to hear that the Flamboyant is being overrun by the cruise crowd. It has long been my favourite hotel in Grenada for chilling out when life gets too busy.

That said, for a honeymoon, I'd have to agree with the previous poster about Twelve Degrees North. What a gem of a place.

My wife and I honeymooned in the Caribbean (albeit some time ago) and we stayed several days each on Barbados, St. Lucia and Grenada. We liked them all, but especially liked Grenada. We stayed at the Spice Island Inn and loved it for its great food and location directly on Grand Anse Beach. We met a cab driver on the first day who showed us around the island the next few days. We found the people to be very friendly and the island very interesting. We are going back again next year.
