Grenada Vacation?

We are probably going to Grenada the first week of August, but I just read that their annual carnival is the first two weeks and now I am not so sure it is such a good idea to go during that time - does anyone know - is this like Mardi Gras? So if we want to site see, it will be virtually impossible to get around the island because of the traffic? We want to go to La Luna because it looks so peaceful, but we also wanted to go into town and go to some other restaurants - i know in NYC if there is a parade you can't drive 5 blocks without it taking an hour and we don't want this on our vacation - please advise. Also, any other input on Grenada (I seem to have read a lot of posts about violence there lately?) or LaLuna would be appreciated! thank you.

Did you ask your questions there? Usually, one of the regulars is very good about providing first-hand information. Meika lives there, and would certainly know how things really are.

While I have been to Grenada (stayed at the Blue Horizon) I cannot provide any advice regarding LaLuna or the festival. I too highly recommend grenadaexplorer.com for advice on Grenada. I used that site extensively in planning my holiday there. In addition to advice/comments from those that have visited; Meika, Sandcrab and Anse are the best informed contributors and/or adminstrators of that site.

I have visited Grenada many times, however not during carnival so I can't help you. Monja and Neil on the Grenada Explorer board are definately the ones to advise you. I'm not aware of any violence there recently.

We stayed at Laluna for a week in February 2004. It was very nice. It is relatively secluded, so it is not that easy to walk to other places or to town. We did not take the meal plan. We ate a couple of times at the Beach House, which is next door, and you can walk to it along the beach. We also went to the Aquarium (by taxi, which is significant), and the food was good. Our best meals were at Rhodes Restaurant at the Calabash resort--some of the best meals we've had in the Caribbean. The restaurant provided transportation, but it was somewhat pricey. Luxurylink sometimes has had specials at Laluna including the meal plan; if you can get one of those, it's a steal.
