My favorite place to stay on SXM is Grand Case. Beauitful, calm beach, relaxed atmosphere, best dining on the island, etc. It is a very quaint, old fishing village and it's not to be missed when on SXM, in my opinion.

Grand Case is also close to Marigot for shopping and nightlife. The ferry to Anguilla is also in Marigot, which makes for a nice day trip.

Try looking up the website for Grand Case Beach Club, which is the nicest property in the area. There are smaller places, as well, but this is the most inclusive.

BTW - You will hear a lot of pros and cons regarding SXM, but my advice it to research it as much as possible and make your own decision from there.

Good luck!

Although it may have been a quaint, old fishing village at one time, today it's basically a road lined with restaurants (some of them excellent) and can be a bit dodgy after the restaurants close. A suggestion for you would be the Le Meridien property about 7 minutes north in Anse Marcel (Marcel Cove), that will put you close to Grand Case and Orient Beach, but yet isolated with a lovely beach and grounds.

Personally, I think the village of Grand Case is pretty run down and seedy looking. That doesn't deter me from enjoying the many excellent restaurants. It is safe, but the appearance does bother some people.

I agree with al's suggestion regarding Le Meridien. It is a much nicer resort than the Grand Case Beach Club, though more expensive and not as convenient in terms of exploring the island.
SXM is definitely worth a visit. We've been there twice and of the few Caribbean islands we've visited, it is our favorite so far.
