Getting to BVI from St. Thomas?
I know from reading Scuba Mom that this is not the preferred way to get to the BVI, but we think it would be a great place for us but really don't like small planes. Has anyone done this? Is it a huge hassle? Scuba Mom suggests spending the night in St. Thomas which would be fine. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated (or maybe I am not understanding the "small planes," smaller jets are o.k. but planes like Cape Air that flies to the Vineyard and Nantucket are not our thing). We do like ferries.
Thanks!

In my opinion, taking the ferry from St. Thomas to Tortola is pretty easy, but STT to Virgin Gorda is a bit of a pain (esp. with major luggage).
One way to improve the Gorda process, if feasible, is to plan your travel schedule around the days that there is a direct ferry between STT and Gorda (last I knew it was maybe Thurs. and Sun.).
Generally, we prefer ferries to small planes.

If you would consider the expense, try looking into Domh’s water taxi.
They go everywhere in the BVI (maybe not Anegada) from St Thomas.
It might be worth it when you consider the cost of a hotel in St. Thomas combined with the fact you will arrive at your ultimate destination a day earlier.
They’re very professional and will arrange with customs to make it a quick stop on entry/departure.

A lot of people go through STT to get to the BVI because there are often more direct flights from the US to STT. The ferry is the most common route from Charlotte Amalie to the BVI. You needn't have to overnight in St. Thomas if your flight arrives by 3 or 4 (depending on the season) -- you should be able to make it from the airport to the ferry dock in time to catch a boat over. The cost is about $42 round trip, and a really great way to transition into Island Time.

I have only flown to Virgin Gorda once and twice to Tortola. Once was a sea-plane, yikes! We normally take the ferry to both. It is easy and more interesting than flying. It does take longer, but it is a pretty easy trip. About 2 hrs 45 min from St Thomas to Virgin Gorda. Take a look at www.bviwelcome.com for info. on schedules. Have fun!
