Frenchmen's Reef
Hi,
We're a couple in our late 20s, going to St.Thomas Feb 29-Mar 7. If anyone has been there at this time of year, how's the weather, the social scene, etc? Are the clubs decent? Food? Activities?
Also, how's the Frenchmen's Reef? Has anyone had experience with their ability to meet requests for upgrades? How are the facilities? Pools? Beach?
Any info/suggestions would be greatly appreciately!

Kira- you will LOVE Frenchmen's Reef..
Feb-Mar is IDEAL weather- 80's and sunny..
Social scene-lots of clubs on the island and hotel also has a club...
Food on island is GREAT!
MAKE sure you rent a car and tour the island on your own....it is tons of fun...
Also rent a sailboat ( with crew) and go to Caneel Bay ( St John) for a 1/2 day snorkel...tons of fun!
What kind of Upgrades are you expecting from Frenchmen's Reef?
The Pool is WONDERFUL there- overlooks the entire bay with all the sailboats and cruise ships...
The beach is accessible by elevator down to Morningstar Beach- gorgeous- has tennis courts and also outdoor restaurant on the beach that is really very good...Morningstar Beach

This beach has two faces: a quite spot to relax in a lounge chair and sip tropical drinks purchased from the beach bar; or, a sporty beach to snorkel, windsurf, sail and play volleyball.
Here are some WONDERFUL restaurants to try:
Hotel 1829:
Built in the early 1800's as a private home, the wide front porch, old world bar and garden terraces reflect gracious colonial living. Their menu is primarily continental and seafood with many dishes prepared tableside .At this restaurant you'll dine by candlelight flickering over stone walls and pink table linens at this restaurant on the terrace of the hotel. The menu and wine list are extensive, from Caribbean rock lobster to rack of lamb this restaurant has it all.

One of the Best Restaurants on St. Thomas.
L'Escargot, Sub Base - Continental - 774-6565 (we LOVED this one!!)

In Frenchtown is the newest addition to the fine dining restaurants. There are two separate dinning rooms offering a warm country French atmosphere and cuisine. Next door is the Mercury Lounge perfect for after dinner music and dancing.

Hotel 1829 no longer has a restaurant.
Frenchman's is an OK place, but I'm not a fan of highrise hotels, especially on STT. There are too many nice, low-rise, beachfront choices. I much prefer Morningstar which is the sister property to Frenchman's and shares the same beach.
Morningstar is a group of three story, beachfront accomodations and has a much more "island" feel to it than Frenchman's.
There are more great restaurants that are only a short ride away from Frenchman's than you will be able to visit. Choices will depend a lot on the type of food and type of "ambiance" that you prefer.

This is all so personal and depends so much on you!
Both the Morningstar and the Frenchman's Reef are nice hotels. If you are at Morningstar definitely try to get a beach view - otherwise I found the rooms somewhat claustrophobic.
They are both very convenient to the social and shopping hub of St. Thomas.
The beach there is simply not on par with what you find in much of the Caribbean (IMHO). Will that be apparent to you? Depends on how much time you've spent in the islands. Definitely take Andy's advice to daysail out and maybe add a daytrip via ferry to St. John to visit Hawksnest or Cinnamon or Trunk (most busy).
Requests for upgrades? You gonna pay for it or hoping they'll just have availability? You are going in peak season so chances are less likely you'll just luck into one - unless one of you is a frequent Marriott customer.
My rec for restaurant is Craig and Sally's and for a bar is Duffy's Love Shack (in Red Hook).

I would recommend a day sail on the Winifred.Captain Sharon Allen will make you feel very comfortable and relaxed while you sail to beautiful St. John. She sails out of the American Yacht Harbor near the St. John ferry dock. Secret Harbor has an exceptional beach and restaurant (Blue Moon).

Thanks to all for your info! I'm looking to get a free upgrade, granted that I'm a Silver Marriott member (over 180K points).
I have been to Nassau, Peter has visited Breezes in the Bahamas and we went to St.Lucia last year. We both learned that we hate all-inclusives, so I'm looking forward to the food being decent!

Actually, the last couple of years the restaurant in Hotel 1829 was open, the food was getting to be pretty average. We continued going for the great dessert souffle's.
If you are looking for good food in the same general area, both Room with a View and Banana Tree Grille are above downtown and have good views. Mafolie is up there also and while having possibly the best view does not have the best food (last August it was pretty good but not what you might expect for the price and location).
Without the view, Virgilio's is right down the street from Hotel 1829. Cuzzins and Herve's are close by also.
Lot's of good places to eat.
