Honeymoon help--the Atlantis

My fiance and I are going to be married in Oct. 2006 and are interested in going to the Atlantis on Paradise Island.

Are the beaches crowded during this time? Please share any experiences you have here.

We're also open to other suggestions? We love elegance and beautiful beaches.

Thanks.

Atlantis seems like more of a kids destination. It has the reputation of being somewhat cheesy, which can be good I guess if you have children but that's probably not what you're looking for in your honeymoon.

October is low season in the Caribbean so anyplace you go will probably be quiet. Make sure that you get trip insurance as it's low season due to the greater likelihood of inclimate weather.

Elegance and beautiful beaches seems to lend itself to places like Anguilla (Cap Jaluca $$$$, Cuisinart$$$, Frangipani $$), St. John, USVI (Caneel Bay$$$$), BVI (Peter Island $$$$), and Parrot Cay $$$$, an island in Turks and Caicos.

You might want to provide some budget info. as well as where y'all will be flying from to help assist people in giving good suggestions.

I'm sorry that those weird symbols appeared in my post. I don't know how that happened and it's never happened to me before!

I agree that the Atlantis if more for taking your kids on vacation than a honeymoon. If your interested in the Bahamas look at Sandals. We loved it. So much we are going to Sandals Grande in St. Lucia in Nov. If your not a Sandals fan, the Radission looked nice also.

We did an afternoon at the Atlantis and it was a zoo. People, kids and tour groups everywhere. Unfriendly staff guarding the doors so non-hotel guests wouldn't get near the pool areas. The aquarium and digs were nice, but not worth $25.00 p/p. We bought a small bottled water at one of the delis and it was $5.00. We were so glad to get out of there.

If you really want to use the facilities at the Atlantis without some of the hassel, you can stay across the street at the Comfort Inn and have access to everything Atlantis has to offer.

I really can't see Atlantis and elegance in the same sentence.

A lot of people bach the Atlantis. We happen to really like it and we have no children! There is always a peaceful place on the beach. Around the pools it is pretty hectic, but we prefer the beach. There are secluded areas with hammocks hung between palm trees. There is a lot to do if you want to, but there are also quiet spots to be found. WE love the aquarium and Dig areas. You could always stay at the Ocean Club which is down the beach a ways and is more elegant. YOu will have full access to the Atlantis property if you stay at the Ocean Club.

My honeymoon is next May and we decided on St John for the beautiful beaches and scenery, nice restaurants, and relaxed atmosphere. We considered Caneel Bay but opted instead to rent a private villa. The price for 2 wks is comparable to 1 wk at a nice resort. And after looking at those beautiful villas with private pools, I decided that sharing a pool with even 1 other couple was too crowded!!

I envision paradise.....privacy, magnificent view, relaxed pace, a couple of fun day trips, wonderful beaches, nice dinners out, and just plenty of time for the 2 of us to be alone together.

Good luck with your search and congratulations!

I just went to the Atlantis last Oct with my family. It was crowded, probably not as bad as when the kids are out of school. There are conventions going on at all times. I don't recommend it for a honeymoon. It is very pricey and crowded. It is a fun family reunion type place.
Also, when we were there, you could not swim in the ocean. The red flags were up everyday. I am assuming this has something to do with the fact that it was Hurricane season. The weather was clear, but somewhere out in the Atlantic there must have been a storm.
Now, no where is hurricane proof, so pick where you want to go and buy insurance.
Personally, for a honeymoon, I would choose Bermuda, Cayman Islands, if you want some action-Aruba, BVI's, St.John, Anguilla.
I went to Paradise Island for my honeymoon 17 years ago this August. We went because it was a cheap honeymoon. The Atlantis was Merv Griffin's Place back then.
Going back this past Oct was fun, but it is a busy place and not very romantic for a young couple. The Atlantis is not elegant. It is Vegas on the beach. I personally am not crazy about the Bahamas. Nassau was dumpy. I did enjoy my trip to the Atlantis though. We had about 15 of us meeting there and we had a ball together. Just not honeymoon material in my book!
Bermuda would be my first choice for romantic, pretty and elegant. They still dress for dinner. Anguilla supposedly has very elegant resorts and is also a more adult-oriented place with great beaches.
Have fun choosing.

Hi - my husband and I visited Atlantis last October. The resort is not what I consider quiet (screaming kids, loud music at the pools, the casino). The pools were busy but there were lots of lounge chairs available. We spent most of our time on the small crescent beach which is sheltered by a breaker. The waves and riptide were very strong in our visit so Cabbage (I believe that's the name) Beach was closed the entire week.

Some may flame me for this but in my opinion, I don't consider Atlantis elegant at all. It is pure Vegas, over-the-top - replete with large scale sculptures - nothing is understated.

If you are looking for simple elegance and a quiet retreat for your honeymoon then I do not recommend the Atlantis.

Consider some of the outer islands of the Bahamas - I have never been but looking at the websites they appear to have retained the natural beauty and relaxed pace of the islands.

Congratulations and enjoy your honeymoon!
