FAVORITE PLACE IN THE CARRIBEAN...

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN THE CARRIBEAN? WHERE IS THE BEST SNORKELING? WHERE ARE THE BEST BEACHES? WHERE IS THE BEST CONCH SANDWICH? WHICH ISLAND HAS THE MOST TO OFFER? WHERE COULD YOU SPEND 10 DAYS W/O GETTING BORED?

That's a very broad question since every island has something different to offer. Too many islands, too little time.

Well, I will definately hear a lot of flak for this one, but I love St. Maarten, Dutch and French. The snorkeling has gone down hill since the 1995 and 1998 hurricnes, but, the beaches are still beautiful, Mullet Bay, Friars Bay, Happy Bay are quiet and unintimidating. Orient does nothing for me, it is a nice beach, but too, too many people. You can eat out and spend 20.00 for two or 200.00 for two, depends what you want. You can stay in a guest house for 79.00 a night or at LaSamanna for 900.00 a night. You can hike into the mountains of the island, kayak in the lagoon, sail around the island, if you want it, its there. they have mountain biking up an old stream bed at an old plantation recovered after the hurricanes in 1995. Everything is there, but unfortunately, you do have to go looking for it. The politics of the island are what I think has turned alot of people against the island, and also created an atmosphere that the true islanders do not like. A native St. Maartener is a very nice, docile, laid back individual that welcomes you to there paradise. I have gone for 4 day visits to 14 day trips, and have always felt, gee, wish I had more time!!!Now before all you people start ranting on the crime and dirtiness of the island, well crime can happen in any small town let alone a populated island in political turmoil, as for dirtiness, yes, there are issues there, but you get hit hurricane after hurricane and see how eager you are to clean up. Not that its an excuse, but it also goes to the infrstructure of the island, why aren't there garbage cans, and garbage trucks, etc. Maybe there should be state run beaches, but currently all the beaches are public, and unfortunately no one wants the responsibility of cleaning up!.

Dear G:
(First off, using all caps on the internet is considered rude....harder to read, considered SHOUTING).

Second, there are no islands in the Caribbean which fit all your criteria.
The best beaches tend to be on the islands with less nightlife, and the islands with the "most to offer" are more touristy which cuts down on 'island charm'.
If nightlife and not getting bored are keys, you need to avoid places like St. John, the BVI's, Anguilla, Antigua, Turks+Caicos, where some awesome beaches are available.
Nightlife and casinos are available on Aruba, which has great beaches, but it's a pretty plastic island and has no vegetation. It's desert.
Paradise Island Bahamas has a very nice beach, casinos and such, with good snorkelling, but it's not my favorite (almost-)Caribbean island by any means.
Cayman has great beach and snorkelling, but is pretty quiet at night....not a party island.

Try Grand Cayman-We stayed at what was the Marriot at the time but has now switched to another chain. Still a decent and affordable hotel.
Great beaches, snorkeling/diving, and restaurants. Nightlife is mostly for the ex-pat/locals who think they are better than the tourists. They are also known for their conch.
Also, for a more laid-back island, try Ambergris Cay in Belize. The most amazing diving/snorkeling place I've been and the people were the nicest I've ever met on vacation. NO nightlife though but VERY relaxing.
