CaliNurse,
We never got around to trying the Beach Cafe at the Westin.
We flew AA LAX-JFK red eye then JFK-STT because it was available for miles redemption (2tkts). On the return, we had a morning flight on a plane from STT-SJU (Puerto Rico), a short 45mins, before the 7+ hr SJU-LAX flight.
I think I got a good price ($532 all-in) for my own ticket.
It took a total of 19 transit hours--from heading out to LAX before finally arriving at our room at the Westin. My wife was not surprisingly ready to kill me during the LONG trip. Next time, I think we'll go the MIA route and plan on an overnight there (just would seem easier with kids).
And waiting for the Westin ferry was no fun. Our flight arrived close to noon, so we missed their 12pm ferry, and had to wait at Crown Bay Marina until the 2:30 ferry. It sucked being so close to paradise yet having to wait for a ferry to get there. Since we're sorta familiar with STT and STJ now, we'll opt for the cheaper Red Hook ferry route next time.

Welcome back bluefan! I enjoyed your trip report. Its nice to be able to stay at both the Westin and Caneel like we did - and see both sides. I always get sad too when I leave Caneel. Its such a beautiful place and hard to leave behind! - Susan
